Anyone else still playing this -IMHO- great game? I find myself picking it up every once a year and playing it over and over again. I can't say the Alien factions really did it for me in Alien Crossfire, but I'm still enjoying it. I do have the occasional crashes in Mission Years beyond 2400, but thank god it autosaves.

Turn Based Strategy, from Firaxis, same as Civilization, only its based in a fictional future scenario. After a large world war that left Earth practically inhabitable, some people managed to escape in a spaceship. Life in that spaceship formed 7 different factions, with 7 different leaders. After a while, something happens, the 7 factions return to what is now known as "Planet", and that's where the game begins.

The game is based (just like Civ) mostly on technology, diplomacy and strategical movements. Each base must be built strategically in order to have abudant sources of nutrients, minerals and energy nearby, in order to build units, facilities, dedicate some of its materials to research, as well as work on Secret Projects. Secret Projects are what is named Wonders in Civ. First faction to complete one disallows any other faction to complete it and gains its bonuses.

Special thing about this game is that technological advances give you different types of units, offensive equipment, shileds, reactors and special abilties, which you are free to combine anyway you want to build new unit prototypes just as you like.

The expansion, Alien Crossfire, adds two alien factions to the story (and replaces the other 5 with new ones so that the new 7 factions have different backgrounds) which fight each other and end up landing on earth, making the human factions get caught up in the crossfire.

Point of the game, just like Civ, is to win either by planetary dominance (eradicate all other factions), or diplomatically (special council in which you need the majority of the vote in order to automatically win as a diplomatically Supreme Ruler), or technologically (by finishing the greatest and final Secret Project of all which leads to transcedence).

You can use probe teams to sabotage or even take over enemy bases, steal techs from them, steal energy credits. You can decide if you want to go by the book or go atrociously (nerve staple citizens that act badly, use super-nuclear weapons, use chemical wapons), which will in turn get you the hatred of other factions, and maybe result in an automatic state of Vendetta with them (a.k.a. war).

I love this game for its depth and focus on diplomacy and techs, it's a well built game, and quite still enjoyable. I'm not the one still playing it, there's a whole community over at Apolyton.net dedicated to it that is still active.

The game supports multiplayer, although that CAN take some time, since it is a turn-based strategy.

I suggest you try it if you like the kind.

I find the weed monsters kinda repetitive and annoying. Didn't really get into it. Why people find this game so good is beyond me.(And they do QUITE A LOT).

Don't know if it works on Vista, but there is a patch for XP (if you have problems with it on XP) :

http://www.firaxis.com/games/game_detail.php?gameid=7&showcon=2

And IMO it's way better that any civ game.

It has two major features that civ games lack : custom unit design and terraform-able terrain.

Still play it a lot, now even with a friend over dial-up. Very Happy

Adds 7 new factions (allows you to mix & match with the old ones although it isn't recommended), new techs, new secret projects and a few new designs and equipment regarding units. So it adds enough content in my opinion.

The story gets expanded to include alien-related interludes (taking over an alien base, first contact, etc.) and... oh, I don't know.

Yes, in SMAC (with XP patch). Don't have SMACX installed.

Does it say anything in logfile?

At what part the game freezes (random, at AI moves, in the city screen, etc)?

Logfile's empty. The game just freezes randomly while moves are being simulated I guess (can't say for sure if it's the AI or an automated unit of mine.)

I'm playing SMACX, with all patches.

The only problem I could find is this one :

Agulf wrote:
Runs without the XP patch on vista and only the game only locks up. I was playing vanilla/retail no updates. It seems, however, that all the freezes were tied to some time after doctrine airpower was discovered, so I believe it's the airplane bug that locks the game up.

If you want a work around, edit alphax.txt and remove the Interceptor prototypes. It is slightly cheating since it means the AI can't defend like that anymore, so if you feel bad add in another prototype to compensate.

Hope it helps.

Nah, doesn't fit at all. I'm talking about years past 2400. Doctrine: Airpower is an early technology.

But thanks anyway.

On August 1st, Electronic Arts trademarked Alpha Centauri, twice.

Second, for an Entertainment services, namely, providing an on-line computer game; Provision of information relating to electronic computer games provided via the Internet.

Does it mean a new game is in development ? Not necessarily, since EA already owned Alpha Centauri, but the trademark was cancelled in 2009 because registrant did not file an acceptable declaration under Section 8. To view all documents in this file, click on the Trademark Document Retrieval link at the top of this page. The new applications are more broad than the old one.

Also, let's remember the original AC was recently released of GOG.com. Might be related to that, or maybe EA will relaunch Alpha Centauri on other DD service like Origin.

I don't care if they screw up a remake. I'm still playing the original. I would be more interested in contributing in a team of eager developers to make a modern community remake once I'm out of Uni.

No, but its (nonexistant) graphical requirements mean you can play it using a VM in the OS it was originally meant to be played in and have none of the issues.

Anybody knows a way to play AC in window & stretched mode ?

The closest I managed to get is to run AC in VmWare, set VM to stretch guest and go to full screen. I want to achieve similar effect without going into full screen.

Can't play it long in native 1024 window mode, my eyes start to hurt Sad
