I think this is the appropriate place for this question...
So, a friend of mine sold his xbox 360 to me - meaning that I've got 2 now.
(I only bought it because i decided to mod one and play backed up games etc.)
my question is can I switch the hard drive between the two without any problems or does that get me into any kind of trouble? (the un-modded i connect to live with, the modded will never see an internet connection) does that even work? what about dashboard updates on the modded one etc.? do savegames work? (since i've got a couple of savegames from rented games that i'd like to "back up" now) stuff like that.
any help would be appreciated.

doesnt work, hdds are linked to the console. you need to buy a kit to do that

an xbox360 hd should work on any xbox 360, i used mine on a couple of xbox 360's.

so it indeed works? and my un-modded console won't be banned from xbl for whatever reason? (my modded one isn't banned as well)

Actually, I do that very same thing myself. Switch the HD from my "main" unmodded 360 to one of the modded ones back and forth with no problems.
