I am looking to buy a new laptop. Is there one brand that's better than the other or are they all the same?

if you don't mind it being dull looking and not state of the art picaso design. Get a lenovo. Top fucking quality.
The new-ish ones starting from the thinkpad R60 and the thinkpad T60 have a built in magnesium alloy roll cage to help protect the innards as well as a monitoring system on the HD that will watch the angel of the HD and if it detects a sudden drop in movement, will park the heads of the HD to prevent it from fucking up on you. The keyboards are legendary as well.
I hate laptops normally but Lenovo/IBM totally changed it.
If not lenovo then get a dell, if not lenovo or dell try for a toshiba satellite or asus. Other than that, the rest are crap. don't let anyone EVER talk you into an HP, Compaq, or acer. And among those, absolutely do not get a Gateway.
So all in all, personally I would rate them in this order..
Lenovo
Asus
Dell
Toshiba
You can also give notebookreviews.com a look over and see what's decent for you.
http://www.notebookreview.com/
Left side you can see the Dell XPS and Lenovo T61 are the top rated.
Dell and Lenovo also have an "outlet" section for their laptops where you can get a used one or new one for like half the price due to minor crap. Like the used ones just had some memory module replaced or something, the new ones because the laptops are built to custoemr spec so they can't sell it as an individual laptop and never shipped off or was sent back brand new in the box.

Thank you for all this information. Really is quite useful. I totally see why you would suggest Lenovo. Can you please tell me what makes HP, Compaq, Acer, or Gateway low end product of lalptops?

HP and compaq are just pure crap, crap service, crap internals, built liek shit, the list goes on. I had a compaq PC once in my life, I ended it's life by putting my foot through the front of it. Those comptuers spend more time being fixed than actually getting used. Acer...a fucking joke. Acer of america is like saying mcdonalds of fast food. Took me 2 hours to get a buddies acer laptop to run smooth the day after he got it cause it was configured like pure shit and the keyboards suck ass.
Gateway on the otherhand, last I knew they make all of their own stuff or have it made so in order for you to ever upgrade your laptop/pc, you have to order the special stuff from them specifically and then charge an arm and a leg for it.
Anywho, I have a Lenovo R60 with a Core Duo CPU and I couldn't be happier with it. The keyboard will let you type flawelessly for hours and just all the neat little extra they put into it makes it worth the money.
Keep this in mind when it comes to PC/Laptops. You get what you pay for. There's a reason HP's Compaqs and Acers are so damn cheap.
And do yourself a favor, stay AWAY from glossy screens, unless you like seeing the faces you make while reading/watching movies/playing games.
My word also isn't to be taken literally, these are all merely opinions. The great thing about the many different models and components with computers is you can get something that fits you. So when shopping for a laptop, test drive em, get what feels comfortable to you and not what people tell you is comfortable.
I bought my lenovo for testing purposes to see if I liked it or not..that was a few months ago and I still have it and don't plan on getting rid of it now just cause I like it that much, that doesn't mean you would or wouldn't like it. One thing I can say that you can take seirously, I have yet to hear 1 person complain about the kayboard. Its been such a success that they've been using the same design on like..I think their las 10 models like, back to the T40 series which was something like 5 years ago.

I realise that this is your opinion but at the same time it seems like you have a lot experience with these laptops which is why I value your opinion. Where can I find these Dell and Lenovo outlets?

DELL XPS M1330 is basically my dream come true. Can play most games low - medium settings, and is very small (13", weighs barely more than a macbook air).
I'm extremely satisfied with mine.
