Hi, I am a weightlifter and I have never really paid much attention to the amount of calories I eat, I just lift weights and hope I gain muscle. So far its going very good but I want to know if I ain't overdoing it.
So what I want to know from the food expert amongst you is the total amount of calories I am taking in every day. I'll make a list of what I eat every day and if you can then plz spit out the number,
when I say slice of bread I mean a single one, when I say 2 then its 2 with something inbetween.
so my bread I eat is called where I live, 7 grains bread(meaning it has 7 different sorts of grain, and it looks kinda darker in colour),
so what I eat is following,
2 slices of bread with cheese (08:00)
2 slices of bread with slice of meat (10:00)
2 sandwhiches both with burger kind meat(12:00)
1x33cl Minute Maid fruitjuice
2 slices of bread with cheese(14:00)
2 slices of bread with slice of meat(16:00)
1x33cl Minute Maid fruitjuice
Evening meal(could be rice with bapi pangang, could be bowl of spaghetti, etc) (19:00)
After workout I also take Nlarge 2 - 4 scoops with loads of milk (this is about 700 calories).
And thats pretty much it really, inbetween I also drink water, but never more than one litre bottle.
thnx very much to anyone who can count this for me,
PC

You sound like me a bit. I always calculate all my meals. You are doing something different then what I do. I go on fat intake and calories. Weight lifters need to have more protein. I think protein = 7 calories. Weight lifters need more calories based on protien. You want to stick to more foods based on protein, like tuna and some low fat meats. Carbs are not that bad providing you eat a balanced diet. Add more fiber to your diet and you will be hungry less. Anything 30% in fat I totally stay away from. Like cheese. Color has a lot to do with food as well. Eat bright colored foods like spinach and kale, tomatoe based sauce. Hope this helps.

You're getting about 2700 calories, which is more than enough.
On the other hand, the quality of the food is pretty poor.
You need to lower the fat and eat more fresh vegetables. You should also eat more protein, chicken preferably, if you want to bulk up.

i found this via google
(Body Building)
For 1 Hour Of Effort:
Weight Lifting or Body Building, Vigorous Effort
At 130 Pounds: 350 Calories
At 155 Pounds: 420 Calories
At 190 Pounds: 520 Calories
At 225 Pounds: 610 Calories
At 250 Pounds: 680 Calories
Weight Lifting, Light or Moderate Effort
At 130 Pounds: 180 Calories
At 155 Pounds: 210 Calories
At 190 Pounds: 260 Calories
At 225 Pounds: 310 Calories
At 250 Pounds: 340 Calories
guess it should help you judge how many calories you are needing each day.
if your aim is to gain muscle and lose fat you need to go through phases.
carbs/cardio workout for losing weight
protein/weightlifting for gaining muscle.
you cant lose weight and gain muscle by trying to do both at the same time acording to everything i read.

It all depends on your metabolism. First of all, your eating way wrong mate..
You want to be eating slow burning carbs all morning and working out in your dinner break/mid day for best results.. Bannana and porridge for breakfast, bagels with peanut butter for 11'amsies, 12:30 ish before workout eat an energy bar.. after workout straight onto the meat, tuna pasta is a great source of protein with some carbs to keep you going. Dont bother with protein shakes after your workout, it isnt what you need right away. You have to replace water youve lost most importantly, and the best way is to glug a pint down then again eat at 2, a bag of mixed nuts preferably brazil and almonds as they are best for bulking. Again eat at 5, perhaps some chicken + pasta, wtih some fruit. Then leave the food until later on in the evening. Eat a late meal at around 8-9 PM, 4-5 lean saussages with mash potatoes and green vedge. Have a quick snack (crackers and cheese) and a protein shake before bed This is all you need, you will get very good recovery eating like this (small meals every 2-3 hours of HEALTHY proteins and carbs.)
No need to be eating so much bread, its not good for you and doesnt help you make gains. (wholemeal bagels and thick seasonned loaf bread are much better if you insist).
You want to bulk up, not take 20 years off your life

Don't have much time to place a post now as I am getting ready for work, but what I wanted to say quickly is that I have an extremely high metabolism, I am what you would call a calorieburner like crazy, I can eat what I want and I will never ever grow fat, my fat percentage is around 7% which is extremely low, thats why every muscle I have shows:LOL: For me its hard to gain weight but I am certainly getting there. Also I cannot work out during the day, I work day shift as I work in IT(so my regular hours are 09:00-17:00).
What I'll do is replace the shit I eat around 12:00 and incorporate some omega fats like this tuna and salmon shit.
I do see good gains lately cuz I gained about 1 kg of good muscle and 1kg mass in the last 3 weeks alone. Fat for me hence ain't a problem cuz I have so so so little, my blood results show this to me, as far as calories go I am on the lower margin, doctor showed me there's like lower and high values and I am about 0.7 above the low value(goes something like 0.140 - 0.270 and I had 0.147).
dunno if that tells you anything about my metabolism.

get rid of the cheese in your diet and replace with a glass of milk. Seriously 4 slices of cheese a day. wtf? you're a weightlifter and you pretty much eat junk food. too many slices of bread too. Stablize your diet or continue eating what you eat. It's not bad but it won't do shit for you. Junk food is junk food no matter what kind of bread you use.
You pretty much eat a loaf of bread in 3 days. That's a fucking shitload.
Reduce the ammnt of sandwiches by half. Add fruit and veggies to your diet. Fuck.
And start running. Keep in shape. Don't just gain muscle. Or you wont live long.

LOL that's a lot of eating in one day. Can you get anything else done besides stuffing your face. Bodybuilding is stupid in most cases anyway since most people start abusing steroids. I doubt that with any serious job you can go along with such food diet because you are busy all the time.
Another thing I've noticed with bodybuilders here is that most of the work in a gym or as bouncers. So in my oppinion bodybuilding sucks on many levels:
1. Chicks in the end don't care how much your abs are showing, as long as you don't look like a jewish prisoner or fat.
2. You are spending waaay to much cash and time to gain that extra pound of muscle
3. Nobody cares if your biceps is really big.
4. If you use steroids... sure you look good at the start. But nobody can take them forever. And when you stop you will lose all your muscle gains but the damage to your kidneys and liver will stay with you forever.
I've been lifting weights for 10 years so I support that. But getting all crazy about muscles and how pumped up you look... it's stupid in my oppinion

I don't use steroids and I never will, eating for me ain't hard cuz I can do it easily in work hours, although I never suspected bread was such an unhealthy food, allways thought grainy breads added nice fibers:LOL:
Also I am not the bulky kind of bodybuilder, you could see me more like the bulkier version of Bruce Lee, just extremely natural and not overdone(ofcourse it still shows but not in the ugly body building way). But why on earth would my blood count be so extremely good when all I eat in your eyes is junkfood, every single value is perfect for me?
Ooh and I go cycling alot as well cuz its a good and enjoyable sport, hate running.

It's not unhealthy, just high in calories. The fibers are good though.

Define weightlifting? Bodybuilders are built to look like can lift a house, but the reality is they build there muscles to be very large and symetrical etc.
Weightlifters would traditionally be used for what is known as powerlifting, where they are still huge, usually have significant bodyfat but are strong as all hell.
At the end of the day don't worry about food that much, as long as you have a nutritious diet, with elevated protein you should be able to make significant gains. If you find at the end of the month you've gained bodyfat then you need to trim down on calories. If you find you've lost muscular size and you wish to gain eat a little more.
Unless you are trying to be competitive diet isn't a huge concern (assuming you are eating a well rounded healthy diet) with a healthy diet with some higher protein sources the only issue will be calories in versus calories out. You need a little more calories each day to build muscle, too many and you get fat. Too few you will lose fat and muscle.
It's really a balance, and to be quite honest each body is different.
The biggest thing for non competition is a well rounded routine consisting of compound excercises along with isolation excercises for every muscle group. Intensity, focus, drive.
For the person who says bodybuilders abuse steriods, that's not exactly true. They often use steriods, but how many bodybuilders do you see dying from steriods or complications? Arnold, Lou, heck even guys like Hulk Hogan are approaching their 60s and they are all very healthy. Abusing anything is bad, and while I have no concrete Data I would say it's the guys in the local gyms who are the most common abusers. Athlete's (proffesional) should be monitored by medical doctors to ensure they remain healthy.
Don't worry about steriods, just simply don't do them.

True Martian but you only know about these celebrities who have tons of money and can pay to be constantly under medical surveilance. Most of the guys in gyms look at these people and think: Wow I want to look just like that. But then they pay a visit to a steroid dealer and suddenly they realise that they would need about 10.000 $ for basic stuff Arnold & Co. use (no growth hormone included). So they get on some crap like d-bol and get their liver shot to hell.
Trust me I've seen people walking around all yellow in the face from liver damage, getting one of their nuts cut off for getting testicular cancer, getting their kidneys so fucked up that they need to be on diabetics kind of diet. Most of these guys were very loud and braging about steroid usage and always advocated how steroids don't hurt you if you are smart. Well the smart thing is not to take them. Period.
Steroid damage doesn't show right away but since it causes psychological addiction which gives you the feeling that you are never big enough it fucks you up real good in the long run.
