|
 |
So, I've been seing stuff like that for a while on various sites.
Games that don't need an installation but run off basically aynthing you put them on (well, maybe not dvds whatever)
Question is how the hell do they do it? I've seen games which I remember needed an installation O.o
Anybody got ayn knowledge on that?

MAME emulator games work. You might could get some popcap stuff to work as well. I'd say anything that doesn't require a lot of I/O would work on a flash drive or something.

Many new games, especially multiplatform titles, doesn't use registry keys at all... they write their settings either in their own or in user's profile folder and that's it... pretty nice.
And when I remember NFS 3 i 4 with their million registry keys, and when even a slightest change resulted in message "FU, reinstall!"

Yeah, most games work like that, or maybe they need some reg values sometimes, you just export the settings from another machine.
Resident Evil 5 is one of those easily-portable games, just copy the whole folder lol.

I can see ThinApp is incompatible with Windows 7 as a program. But what about already existing ThinApp "packages", do they run on win7 x64 for example ?
Bacause if not, then it's super-uber virtualization ultra-fail for Vmware ! Just lol.
EDIT: Also, doesn't speed suffer, is it practical to thinapp a whole game, like for example, batman ?

^^ I've got a Thinstall version of System Shock 2 and it runs great on Win7 (least, it did with b7000 and b7100, I've not since tried it on the new RTM)

The downside to some Thinstall games is that they're not "entirely" portable. Earlier example of System Shock 2, for instance, saves cfgs/profiles/save-games in AppData on the OS drive. That's not exactly "portable" as you'll lose all that when/if you move the game to another machine. :-\

Naaah, shit ! I created a ThinApp package of Ricochet Infinity and it really is incompatible with win7.
By the way, why did it produce 2 files ? The big one was the actual thing and the smaller was some inventory ... something ?
