Hey guys, quick question. Hopefully I don't start a flame war but here goes:

I played both lotro and wow a while ago for a few months a piece about 6-10 months back. I enjoyed both but eventually fell out due to time constraints, boredom, and massive alt-ADD. I'm looking to get back in to one of them and I was wondering what your opinions were on the matter. Especially consider what changes I may have missed across the last half a year or so. Also, I'm not buying any expansion packs. The idea of paying $50 for a game, 15/month and then more money for expansion packs seems obnoxious to me, but that's another thread.

Things to consider: I enjoy a good solo but a competent group is always satisfying. I rarely have time to (or want to, for that matter) sit for more than and hour or two playing a single instance. I enjoy almost all classes and roles but generally spurn micromanagement (ie pets).

Any and all opinions are greatly appreciated. Please keep interthread flaming to a minimum please, I respect that we all have different opinions but in this thread I'm probably the only one that cares about yours.

Thanks

WoW was far better than LOTRO, everything with LOTRO is so damn ugly, the characters walks like they have sticks up their asses (especially the town folk NPC's). The graphics are extremely generic with no style whatsoever. The interface looks detached from the game and is very ugly as well. Gameplay wise WoW kicked its ass too, just more to do and everything was just more fun (loved the different Battlegrounds). The skill system is also very boring in LOTRO. Every class (at same level) looks the same since there are so few items in the game.

I also found it too be an even bigger grind feast than WoW most of the time because it really rewards the player with new traits if you grind; e.g kill 200 crows or whatever - NOT a good development of this genre, rather the opposite. Ugly pop-ups (even on highest possible settings), cant even swim underwater. Quests are even more boring than in WoW (e.g has to do shit within a limited time frame - also called "worst gameplay element ever invented"), cant explore areas until you reach a certain level (lame), raiding is far from the quality in WoW.

Why havent you considered Age of Conan? Seems more fun.

Good points all of them. Although I disagree on the graphics portion (I'm a fan of Tolkiens style, although the execution IS a bit bland). When did you play it last? I heard it's greatly improved over the last year.

As to Conan, I haven't considered it because I don't really want to buy a new game. I don't have a lot of disposable income so I wanted to try and keep it within games I already own. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Honestly if your not going to deal with expansion packs then I say don't even bother playing mmorpg's. I understand your logic and agree with you 100% however with each expansion pack means slightly better items that you simply can't get. With each one released it will be harder and harder for you defeat other players. Also you will see the number of players drop from the main original lands to go be at these new places.

Just save your money and buy something else that will make you happy.

I only played the trial of LOTRO so I'm only going to give my view on wow (playing since beta).
If you don't want to buy expansion packs, don't go back to wow. The community is more about end game then most games. Sure there are some guilds that stick with old content but they are sadly a minority. Also the fact that Blizzard neglects the old content a bit. So unless your mind can be changed with buying an expansion pack don't go for wow.

WoW is one of the few games that I played where I can defend the expansion packs since with that monthly fee you pay you get customer service and pay for their servers (atleast most mmo's make this excuse) you also get free content on a regular basis and trust me their aren't much mmo's out there who do that. The expansion itself: well blizzard is not an EA or a Sony where they try to squeeze as much add-ons out as possible, instead you get a quality piece and alooooot of extra content (I wasn't a fan of TBC tho). So don't always assume an expansion pack is of the devil.

Hope it helped and I respect your view on expansion packs just don't generalize them. Smile

If you ahte Expansion packs try City of Heroes (if you're into the super-hero genre) or EVE online (if you like space-flight stuff). Both have a buttload of expansions but all of them are free.

My main gripe with expansion packs is that for $20 more I can get a whole new game with a lot more content, though I can understand the validity of massive expansion packs like TBC and WotLK. One thing, though, that's pushing me away from WoW is the apparent massive influx of twinks due to the huge amount of gold floating around in end game and nothing to buy. Since I have major alt-ADD, I always play BG in 10-19 and thus have a rather large disdain for twinks.

I'm really considering CoH right now. I played EVE alot before and I was just completely overwhelmed by the time commitment (not time spent played, but joined). People that joined 3 years ago have such a huge lead on a noob as to make progression almost worthless.

Anyone have anything positive on LotRO? Or negative on WoW?

I have played both LotRo and WoW. If I was in your place I judge by the possibilities the games give me. Lotro is a nice game but without a group of friends to go out and have fun with it quickly becomes frustrating at Level 50.

I would rather go and play WoW, which has been casualized to hell - and thus offers you a chance to get into fun with other players even if you lack a group of friends.
