Shame its not a realtime shooter though like its predecessors. I think Id prefer that type of game more. Havent played this yet though so I cannot pass judgement.
May the NFOrce be with you always.

I always found the R-Type games incredibly hard, and thus they didn't appeal to me... Is it the same here, or is this playable without training?

Wow they still make R-type games?!
I use to own the original for the Sega Master System back in the day. Seems it has changed allot though.

Hmm, I'm in the third mission and really enjoying this game. Not as much as I enjoyed Advance Wars on a GBA emulator, but still ...
Any other recommendations about this kind of gameplay on PSP except the "tactics" games ? Or any serious strategy for that matter.

Yeah, dump the crappy PSP, and get DS with Advanced Wars DS, Advanced Wars 2, FF Tactics, Luminous Arc, Drone Tactics etc. etc.
Meanwhile check out two Fire Emblem GBA games on the emu - it's Advance Wars with medieval/fantasy setting.

PSP is crappy because it has 5 good games and a few dozen crappy ones. The console is a failure as a gaming device.
DS is uber cool with all those awesome casual games, RPGs and tactics. It may not have God of War but it's long-lasting FUN unlike PSP.

I agree the DS has a generally more variable game library, but I prefer a few good and impressive games like GoW,Crisis Core,Silent Hill 0rigins,Manhunt 2, the 2 grand theft autos etc etc.
Besides, I don't depend 100% on a handheld console for gaming, I have a PC biatch \m/
