VLC is perfect. Start the film then pull the subs file onto the player. It should work

it says 'unrecognized format' when i open it in VLC. it says it about the .sub file, not the movie file

Ahha! .Sub never used them. Use .srt files.

Is it just a text file?
If so I can't see why not. Or make a new empty srt file and cut and paste the contents from the sub file.
That may work.

Strange. See if you can get the subs you need in the format I use.

if it's a direct vobsub rip off a dvd (over a megabyte in size), you also need the .idx file which contains the subtitle timings

Install k-lite codec pack to have Vobsub, then put three files in the same folder (AVI, SUB, IDX) and then it will play fine in VLC, WMP or BSPlayer.
And Syco, grab SRT subs here if it doesn't work http://subscene.com/stalker/subtitles-61732.aspx (first one, for SHIZO release).

always use the srt subtitles as these can be customized. in xbmc you can change font, size, colour, etc... and these srt files are also the smallest in size. i kind of refuse to deal with idx/sub

1. install vobsub
2. set the path where vobsub has to look for subs (starting from your movie directory: "" or "subs" or starting on your hd "C:\subs" etc.)
3. rename the subs to have the samen name as your movie, but with different extention of course
4. Start your movie
This should do it.

I never had to do any of that. I just have vanilla VLC and I drag the srt file onto the film when it's playing. Works fine, no codecs or anything.

yeah but i dont like vlc. in theory it should work fine with subs, but with vobsub he'll be able to use whatever program he wants.

In VLC you might need to press "J" or "K" while the movie is running, I don't know which one. That will enable the subtitles from the appropriate subtitle file.

Havent used VLC in a while but in MPC everything works fluently as long as you rename the sub into an exact match of the avi. IE: NFOrce.The.Movie.avi - NFOrce.The.Movie.sub (or srt).

lollll , this thread is funny , i watch all the movies , 1º withouth subs , then with portuguese BR subs , then with Portuguese PT subs.
" Lazy Man's MKV " , should be enough , and all subs with same movie name , EX. -Movie-Bimbocao.mpeg -SUBS- Bimbocao.srt.

I'm using KMplayer here after trying MPC, VLC and such, great player with a ton of options. If the sub file is named the same as the avi it picks it up, no Vobsub needed ( I have an allergy against too much software on my PC).

you have an allergy against too much software but you have mpc and vlc and kmplayer as well... you could just download vobsub and get rid of vlc and kmp and have one less piece of software on your pc than you started with

I've tried almost all players, KMplayer is the one that survived.
