I'm sure many of you will agree with me that entertainment today is almost pure shit. TV, Music, and yes video games have all been at a huge decrease in quality. Well I have come up with a theory onto why which I have shared a small amount of it in another thread but will go into a bit more detail on this one.

While all three forms of entertainment are very different they have similarities and I'm sure you can simply edit what I am about to say about video games to fit the other two perfectly.... so here we go.

Video games didn't start off as a very grand form of entertainment. In its early stages most people never even played them. However today its a soaring form of entertainment that still hasn't hit its peak and makes very profitable businesses. Once games got more and more into depth with storylines, enhanced gameplay , and graphics it simply skyrocketed and became more and more loved everyday.

But nevermind the great past of video games what really matters is the present and the not to bright future of them. Today those storylines normally aren't so grand and the gameplay is simply a clone of another game but somehow still managed to screw up and make it worse. Graphics are the only thing that hasn't come to suffer such a cruel fate but sadly thats all thats really being marketed now and while it may look pretty you still can't interact with things in a truly realistic manner anyways.

So whats happening exactly when it comes to the quality of video games? Are the developers simply running out of ideas? Whats going on exactly?

Well heres the answer to that question. Games now are produced as fast as possible they are rushed and then greatly hyped... why? Because mass producing things wields a highly larger profit then to make something slow and with quality.

I know what your thinking "what about *insert name of game here* it was a great game!"
Yes it probably was a great game but notice how rare those great titles are now when in the past we were simply spoiled with them? Also notice the % of good games that aren't controlled by the evil giants like EA? Its very rare when one of those giants actually makes something truly worth playing.

So whats the problem if those mega companies aren't releasing good games? I'll tell you what... since they realized pushing them out like our teenage girls are pushing out babies today is the best thing they can do. Its a threat to their sales if someone else releases a truly awesome game that you will look fondly to the rest of your life so what are they to do? They BUY the development company that made the game along with its copyrights.... why? Not to make awesome sequels and make lots of money off the games franchise like the original developers planned. But rather to hurt the game by making horrible sequels that would never live up to the original while knowing full well it will continue to sell because of the name. They mean to destroy the quality of the games and simply can not allow others to continue to make them.

A perfect example of this thats going right now is Fallout 3. The fallout series was a great series with so much more potential even though it already achieved greatness. Now Bethesda owns the series and they are stripping everything down like a chop shop does to a stolen car. Unlike the chop shop bethesda plans on giving it back but anything worthwhile to it will remain gone forever. They even said it themselves "we are making the game we want to" meaning its not really the Fallout you know and love.... We just sodomized it until it lost all dignity and to the point where it will never be the same again. Like a lover who returns from war half a man completely broken on the inside.

So why all of this with the risk of perhaps taking the gaming industry down? Simple it won't harm the gaming industry a bit. TV, Radio, Video games were nothing great when they were all new. But since that was all that was known it certainly was good enough for the people each and every time. If they produce low quality things eventually thats all people will expect and demand because they simply don't know of the better alternative... like a communist dictator who lies to his people telling them the rest of the world is a wasteland compared to theirs even though its the farthest thing from the truth. This makes it amazingly easy to be popular and successful when the ploy works.

The reason why graphics remain to be top notch is because simply put it... people like shiny things and it makes it sell so much better. The same concept of gold its almost worthless being used as a metal but boy do people like to have and wear it because its shiny. This is the only thing that will continue to improve if this trend doesn't cease.

Now normally companies compete in several forms of way but the most successful way is to improve their product to higher quality then the competitors and this is exactly how Video games became so great in time. You simply had to make the better game for it to sell. Notice how this simply doesn't exist anymore? The companies that are acting like communist dictators like mentioned above seem to actually be working together with this ploy... they certainly don't treat each other as competitors nowadays. They know their crap WILL sell so perhaps its already to late maybe the standards have already lowered to the point of no return where we will accept just about anything as entertainment... well certainly not I but most people.

I'm so sick of it and as I said you could insert radio/music or TV into this whole thing as well and get the same results.... Deal or no Deal is a perfect example of TV what kind of retarded game show is that? Pick a brief case and do simple odds of whats in it and even have a board helping you to remember what remains... Its god damn ridiculous! I'm sick of it and even more disturbed of the fact that millions watch the show everytime its on and enjoy it! Well I'm sure you all get the point by now..

Tbh, the protections in today's entertainment are more interesting than the material they are protecting.

For a start, congrats on starting a thread with a decent enough amount of debatable content. Congrats on being able to use paragraphs correctly and acceptable grammar, your post was readable unlike 99% of the illiterate from-god-only-knows-where-nationality english speaking average on this site Wink

Now to your actual argument, lets talk shittyness!

The gaming industry has gone down hill for several reasons, none of which you mentioned above I'm afraid. You made your first mistake by not separating console gaming from PC gaming. That be the majority here, us god spawned legionnaires that are the PC gamers Wink

The first reason PC gaming went down hill is because of one thing; Consoles. The Ken Levine's of the gaming industry (once highly respected for shitting out trophy worthy gems of awesomeness such as system shock 2) sold the hell out once they realized how many 14 year old retard babies there are in the world with an xbox360. This means huuuuuuge amounts of money for very little amount of effort; if it looks pretty and makes loud bangs it will probably sell 000000's. You can't blame them really, if someone was hovering that kind of cash in your face when you've spent the last 10 years or so of your life making games in your basement with a few buddies (the golden days of game developing such as half-life 1 mods, CS, TFC. quake mods etc) you will byte like a piraña fish to a pinky finger in a pond. PC gaming then suffered because 99% of the devs couldn't give a fuck about us any more since we bring probably less than 5% of the money they could earn if they sold out to mass producing games like gears of shit for the 360 then badly porting a version 1 year later for the PC gamers to try to keep us hush hush.

Second, we have the next problem which is effecting every form of modern entertainment in the present day and is pretty much unavoidable; everything has been done before, remade, sequel'd and ran through the ringer 5 times over. It isn't really down to lack of creativity as most will think, it's just a fact that ideas are running dry for bringing new things to the table especially in the games industry. (probably the reason were getting force fed a nice looking but crappy playing first person shooter every 2 months, its easiest to do and will sell).

There are however a few developers who are still standing on the mini islands in the vast ocean of shittyness that is the gaming industry.. so hope is not entirely lost. Blizzard just to name one right off the bat, remains true to the PC platform and so far has given the console market the finger; alongside giving great customer satisfaction and creating games such as WoW (Not a fan myself but the game reaks of genius and is well kept with regular updates). They also have one of the best games in history's sequel in the making (SC2) so I guess I'm a bit of a fanboy... but what the hell, maybe if we do fanboy a decent dev we may keep them on track.

As for the film industry, its going through a huge rut right now largely for the above reason of lack of creativity and 'something new'.. Almost all films of the current are remakes or based on books, No country for old men, atonement etc to name some are based on books. Gone are the days when an uber-film comes out such as Forrest Gump(granted this is based on a book but is still an amazing flick), Jurassic park, or the Matrix. Now every summer comes around and all we have to look forward to is the next boring CGI comic-to-movie starring annoying teenage actors and down right bad acting. (I think its Hulk and Iron man this year?)

Oh well.. maybe things will pick up. But for now, I guess we could al go outside for once.

But for the part of it, for the film industry that is, NuclearShadow made his point. If you just look at the films that aren't Hollywood made you'll see people who gives a sh**. Tthere are tons of quality films that are Spanish production (Pans Labyrinth, lots of Almodovar films etc.), Japanese (Cha no aji, Crouching Tiger hidden Dragon, Takeshi Kitanos films ...), and many more. All the Hollywood based films are (most of the time) worthless and are caring only of the profit they gain...

Yeah I agree. Foreign film is thriving. But we don't get half of it at the cinema, and have to wait for the dvdrips.

The gaming industry is in a unique position, unlike film TV and music. It's the forefront of a truly remarkable media, a place where all forms of media come together, in an interactive form where we can define the outcome.

In this sense games like Bioshock, Call of Duty, Mass Effect, Oblivion, are demonstrating something akin to the efforts of early pioneers to claim and make a stake for new territory.

The challenge for this new medium is to be truly original, genre defining, and possibly even change the way we behave socially and culturally without giving in to the enormous financial pressures of big publishers.

Good developers need to be aware of this, and take risks. If not this new brave frontier will never be conquered.

the only thing i hate about the gaming industry today that its became to mainstream , yes some times glitches happen and we get some of the most memorable games but those glitches are soon corrected when the dev team that made this gem becomes assimilated with some monster-mainstreamer like EA
