Some of the security settings are just way to much. There's security and then there's overkill you know?

Just turn off User Account Control and all the hassle is gone.

Give vista a chance and you'll grow to like it Wink

i have to say, i am really disappointed with vista.

It is at least 10-20% slower than xp and 2-3 times as slow as unix. I installed a vista/fedora dual boot on my laptop and the same program i coded takes at least 2-3 times long on vista than on fedora.

And i am working with databases etc on my laptop, and thats the reason i installed my dual boot, because it is shit. Try to start and SQL server on vista. You have to bypass a zillion "protections", djeez, it is an admin account and i know what i am doing, just let me do it. 2 days ago it took me 2 focking hours to get httpd.exe started and keep it running on vista. You know how long that takes on my fedora? 2secs service httpd start and it is running.

and what the hell is that black/grey screen always. Vista is like an OS for retarted kiddies. 'are you sure" "really??" "really?" "no turning back" "you will dieeeeeee".

Yesterday my hd was getting full and i couldnt find where the stuff was. So i was messing around in the cmd window and all of a sudden im in a temp folder with 10GB temp files. And i went to explorer and i couldnt enter that folder "you will die" or something like that. And i turned of "protect me from entring folders" and "hide hidden folders", so i had to del *.*/q/s in the cmd window.

Oh and the icons on the desktop look like shit, they are waaaaaaaaay too big or waaaaaaaay to spread out, it always look like there are waaaaaaay too few icons on it.

It just seems as they made 100000 extra features noone want to use, so they just al made them mandatory... good idea. But im too fed up with formatting, installing other version blabla, been there done that a zillion times in my life, so i dont do it anymore. The next windows better be better, or i'll become a nerdy mac or unix freak for the rest of my life instead of dual boot shit...

yeah another thing, if something crashes, i will kill it and restart it.

How many times has vista succeeded in "stopping and restarting"? 0 times here. And the screen keeps semi frozen and semi white with that stupid circle (bohoo, no hourglass but a rotating circle, innovation!!). Then i have to ctrl alt del, via via via you get process manager and you can kill... 'improved user experience', i guess..

While searching info sometime ago on how to turn UAC off, I found a lot of recommendations to NOT turn it off but just switch it to the quiet mode.

There is an utility to do that - TweakUAC. Works fine with SP1.

Switch UAC to the quiet mode wrote:
This option does not turn off UAC; instead, it only makes UAC to operate in the quiet mode. In the quiet mode, UAC does not display the elevation prompts for the administrators. That is, when you attempt to do an administrative task, you will be allowed to proceed automatically, without prompting you to confirm the operation. All other features of UAC would still be enabled: the programs will run with the standard user permissions by default, and the standard users will still see the elevation prompts (the quiet mode applies to the administrator accounts only).

Nice find! The first thing I did when I installed Vista was turning that annoying UAC off...

Why didn't they include the option for quiet mode in the frst place?

It's just retarded that you have to enable it using a separate program.

@ LeoNatan SP1 works fine with the OEM crack even with the new patch.

Yeah, thanks! I have Server 08 RC1 on my laptop, but it will expire soon, so I'll probably put Vista Business SP1 in there.

But if UAC bothers you that much, enable the admin account and work in that. It's exactly the same as quiet.

Been running Vista since October last year, and i'm not gonna go back to XP.

Also, i recently updated to SP1 on Microsoft.Windows.Vista.Ultimate.x86.Integrated.July.2007.OEM.DVD-BIE, worked perfectly without any cracking.

I had nothing but crashes when I installed the hooky SP1 on Vista.. Not sure if it was software or hardware related though. My HD was IDE, and I've heard that Vista is a SATA fanboy..

Anyhow, I got rid of the PC and took on the Macbook.

Not looked back yet Smile

There are plenty of sweet games out for mac actually Laughing

Im not really looking to play the latest games because quite honestly, nothing in the last year or so besides maybe the story of Bioshock has impressed me.

However, since Blizzard are focusing heavily on a Mac version of Starcraft 2, I'm happily waiting Smile
