I grabbed rfactor at the weekend and I found it to be a great sim but quite diffcult to get into, I havent't really tried the online yet as i was still in practacing some of the tracks. GTR2 is also a very good racing sim with an active online community but for me as far as fun PC racing online is concerned I prefer Toca 3, it's just fun to play, with a stack of vehicles, tracks etc and there's always an abundance of servers available to play. I don't have an Xbox but for me nothing has yet beaten Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2, I have never understood why this game was never released on the PC.

Well as said in previous posts there is Project Torque who is free and great. Might not be the best game but I love the handling and there's a lot of people playing. For single player commercial game I would take Colin Dirt and multiplayer Test Drive Unlimited.

for the true racing sim games you really cant do without a wheel + pedals so you best get one if you want to play rfactor, live for speed or gtr2
btw heres a decent site dedicated to racing games http://www.bhmotorsports.com/ its for pc and console though but loads of hardcore pc racing fans use there forums

TrackMania United hands on. Completely community driven, every track is made by community members so you get constant stream of new content. Loads of servers with 7 different environments, you can play like a week without driving the same track twice. Very very addictive. Trackmania united got around 1000-1500 people online at evening. Any other racer got as many? highly doubt it, so there
I played the games mentioned above in MP and most of them are fun for a few hours or days, but I just can't see the depth of MP and online community as big as trackmania's.

If you like realistic simulations that are easy to get into (if you put in the time obviously) but difficult to master; rFactor, GTR2, Live for Speed rank up t here as the most popular to my mind.
The best place for discussing racing games in my opinion is; http://forum.racesimcentral.com/ and you can see just how many games are still active today (and worth a look).
Wheel and pedals are not necessary in everyone's case, I've heard of people using joystick and joypads and even mouse/keyboard combinations before and being competitive - but for me that's beside the point because I like to be immersed in the game and a wheel and pedals setup helps that.
Check out the forum and read up.

Regarding just joining a random public server you get out what you put in and it depends on the types of people you are racing against but these games are really all about organised events, whether thats leagues where you play a season long affair or one off specials. Unfortunately you have to go looking for this kind of action, it won't pop up offer itself to you - but there are websites dedicated to each game that cater for advertising for various leagues and most are happy to see new faces.

yea I would like to play gt5 and gta4 to but 400 euro's is just too expensive
anyway, test drive unlimited is okay for online racing, but your limited (heh) to 8 players, still it's nice to just drive around on the island, but there only one circuit...
what I prefer: GTR2, loads mods, cars, tracks...I play on a server www.pilsbierbude.de which has an automatic update program, it downloads all new stuff and installs it automaticly, really rocks
but GTR2 is kinda hard to get into, especially online, but it is rewarding
but it probably won't be as much fun without a FF wheel.
