PostPosted: Fri, 14th Mar 2008 16:49    Post subject: Employment Woes
I have been employed by my current employer for 4.5 years now and have changed position within the company since then. Having met a girl online in the last 12 months she has now invited me to move in with her. This would mean finding a new job as she lives nowhere near where I currently work. I know I have a contract as I recall signing one with my current employer but I have no idea where my copy is so I have asked how much notice is required. As I was only expecting 1 month I was quite gobsmacked when I was told it was 3 months in my contract! Everyone I have told tells me this is a long time and unfair. I have to agree but I guess if I cant find my contract, I have no choice but to work 3 months. Besides that, I would like to remain amicable to my current employer and receive any pay I am entitled to as well as a reference. He says even though 3 months is quite a long time, he doesnt think it is too early to be applying for other jobs and if I do find a good offer, he would consider letting me go early. Since my decision to leave, he has decided to sell the business. His options were to employ a temp or run the shop himself for 3 months, neither of which he wants to do. I am not happy as I expected to be living with my girlfriend next month and now it is not going to happen!

Anyway the business is for sale if anyone wants to buy it! Smile

Haha someone else already suggested that but 1. she wont move and 2. Ill just end up in debt more than likely! Someone has rang up today about it actually and arranged to visit for a guided tour next week. If the place can sell before my 3 months is up I can be out of here sooner! Smile

You could try giving them notice, and they might just ask you to leave right away. Often they do that because they don't want someone hanging around who knows they are leaving and might steal stuff etc.

Its my fault the place is even being sold at all, ever since I said I was moving. Once Im gone there is no reason for the managing director to continue with the company which is why he is trying to sell it. I have asked how much notice they need and its 3 months and they absolutely do not want me to leave right away. 10 years ago it was making a lot more than £22K a year but back then components cost so much more than they do these days. There is significant competition in the area also which has lead to the decline of the business.

You can make a good living off 22 net profit.

In € that would be 2300€ per month. At least in Germany you could spend fine days.

That is correct. It used to but it was too much hassle to keep upto date and maintain with just myself. Maybe the next owners with rebuild it.

Ask your personnel office to supply you with another Contract. I'm not sure if they are required legally to give you another one, but I can't see them having a problem with issuing you another one.

Why would I want another contract? I want to move and find a new job. They want 3 months notice from me before I can do that. End of.

It's not such a bad thing to have to wait a bit longer for such an important step. If after a couple of months you still feel the same way then you're good to go.

You have lost your copy and are taking their word for how much notice you need to serve, even though it's an unusually long notice. Personally I would be asking for another copy of my contract to make sure they are telling the truth.

There may also be something in there which mentions being able to serve a shorter notice.

Carl is right. Actually by law they have to give you a copy of your contract.
It's in your contract, actually it's in everyones.

Do you think they would let you finish early if you found a new job?

Yes that would be likely as it would be just as likely if he sold the business before the 3 months was up.

all I can say head, is that things change when you start living with a chick. I'd say live with her for a bit (6months - year) before you make a drastic change and give up your work and stuff.

Hope things work out well, all im saying tho is that chicks change when you start living with them. Atleast, they have in my experience

This is good advice. I think the change you may think you see in your partner is just down to the fact you never truly know someone until you live with them.

When you're just meeting up casually, or spending the odd weekend together you're both on your best behavior, you make an effort to get on and bond. This can't be maintained indefinitely, it's exhausting. So when the veneer of courtship isn't constantly there any more to buffer any negative feelings, you see the real person.

Be careful Nouse, to me it seems you're the only one taking a risk, it's bad for one partner to be more invested then the other. Wink

I've lived with my gf for almost 2 years now, it's been great. Just remember to do your share of the housework and agree when she says silly things like 'the couches need accent pillows' or any other girly crap and things will be fine Wink

LOL, my mistake. I've worked from 4am till 6pm today, only had four hours sleep too so feel pretty brain dead, using caffeine to stay awake till a normal bedtime. Actually feels like i'm mildly tipsy!

Longest I've ever worked I think, do you know what agar is? It's the jelly like substrate that bacteria grow on in petri dishes. Well I had to prepare and pour over 2000 of these today ready for the rest of the week. There should have been four of us and there was only two so it took the piss!

I have had to do that before. It sucked. It was a machine that droped and filled the plates in. They plates they had weren't the right size so they would jam. Old Machine. Every 8 or so one you had to point it into place and hope you didn't spoil , it.

This one women was weird. For the Blood ager she only knew how many of these little unmarked bottles got dumped into what parax dish. Just made a mess of little bottles to wash. I swear someone who baked cakes for a living could of done better then her.

She keep sticking plactic in the autoclave Sad

Yeah what takes so long is heating the agar and then waiting for it to cool enough to put in the machine. We also have a few fairly rare agar varieties that require special preparation and all that has to be done by hand. Crying or Very sad

Where did you work pistol? What position did you occupy? Smile
