If i leave a download on and go do something else, i come back an hour later to find vista has locked the user status thing and paused the download 15 mins in.
I cant find any settings to turn this shit off!!

can't you disable it in the power savings menu?

Try selecting "High performance" plan in power options. Never had your problem before.

Ive never had this problem either. Although i do remember mucking about with the power saving settings and admin settings. Because everytime i did ANYTHING it asked me if i wanted to do this as an administrator.
I'm sure the answer can easily be found on google

That was called UAC as far as the do you want to do this .... Are you sure?
To disable UAC:
Start > msconfig > Tools tab > Disable UAC > Launch > reboot
I think compubrain's suggestion would fix the power saving issues. It could also be that in your network cards settings you have the Enable Hibernation Mode checked.

This is what happens
If i leave the comp for around 20 mins, the screensaver kicks in. 10 mins later, the screen goes black. When I come back to the comp I have to hit space bar to bring it around, and when the screen reactivates 2 seconds later i have to click "HOME" button in the centre of the screen above a message that says "Is Locked."
Then it flashes me back to the desktop as I left it, with all applications still open, including paused downloads.

In "Personalization" select "Screen Saver Settings" and de-select "On resume, display logon screen".
