|
 |
I have a bit of money saved now, and since the Geforce 9 series will probably be released any day now, i'm thinking of buying one. But i don't know if i'll need a new PSU. I currently have a 550W PSU, and a 7800 GTX, 2 gig RAM, and a 3500+ Athlon 64. I know i'll be bottlenecking such a powerful card on this system, but i'm going to upgrade the RAM and CPU too in the following months. But right now, all i can afford is a GFX card, and that will currently give me the best boost, so i'm getting that first. So my question is, will i need a better PSU to run that card plus all my current hardware? Because if i need a new PSU i'll have to wait another month, since i only have about €550.
And while we're on the subject, does anyone know of any U.S. based hardware stores that ship internationally? Because a 9800 in Europe will probably go for anything between €500-700, while in the U.S., the same card would only cost at most €400.

not actually helping here, but i think if you have enough money to get a 9800 GTX then you could also afford a new CPU / mobo and wait for the midrange line from nvidia coming this summer, that's what i'd do. Just a suggestion
Oh and 550w will most certainly not be enough for that card, methinks.

why not invest the money in an 8800GT and a new CPU?
asus z170-A || core i5-6600K || geforce gtx 970 4gb || 16gb ddr4 ram || win10 || 1080p led samsung 27"

600w will be enough for that setup even with new mobo and cpu [intel]
ppl tend to get paranoid over psu power
just make sure it's real 600w and not some cheap crap, tagan will suffice

listen to this man!
athlon 64 single core is seriously outdated stuff. get a core 2 duo or something and an
8800 GT. They are really cheap now you can find em below 200€, and it will still be over twice as fast as your 7800 GTX.
the 9800gx2 is coming in march, but it's extremely hot, uses loads of power, and it's really just 2 8800 GTS running in SLI on a single card.
So there will be many games without any performance improvement over a single 8800 gts that you can buy right now, just like the 3870x2.
If that 9800 was a real single core next generation GPU I'd definitely get that, but that dual gpu... thing is probably not a very good idea.
Also, buying from the US is a very bad idea because if you're unlucky you'll get 100€ of customs slapped onto it, plus insane shipping costs, and who knows how the warranty stuff will work with a card that you bought from a different continent? Do you have warranty in the US or in europe? Who knows! :P
But yeah if you're dead set on everything, then a 550W should be ok if it's a quality PSU.

Because then i'll have to upgrade again in about a year or less. If i buy the best card now it'll last a lot longer.

Not with that CPU... I had an A64 4000+ (single core) when I got my 8800GTX, and I can tell you, it was just a huge bottleneck. Once I got my C2D, the 8800GTX finally could live up to its potential.
It is possible an 8800GT + C2D could yield a better performance than even a G90 with your old CPU.

Depends really, I was going to ship a bunch of comp hardware out to _sin_ and was going to cost like 50USD to ship it and that was it.
