Power supply is way too big for what youre powering, look at a 600-650w.
Save some bucks there.
Also, the 3870's are VERY good cards, and the 8800GT and 3870 have very small performence differences. I went 3870 because of crossfire, but with the 1 card and if you are willing to spend the extra $20-30 for 10-15% better, you may as well go nvidia.

Is 850W really to big for 5HDD's and the components above?
Forgot to mention I have an Creative XFI to shove in too..

Frankly, I'd say yes, but you'd probably be better off being safe than sorry so stick with it i guess.

Who cares about the wattage, any PSU manufacturer can throw out numbers but not many of them come close to attaining those claims. Read some reviews on the PSU you want and check out it's efficiency and load ratings.
A lot of times powersupplies look good on the surface but when pushed to an extreme (Gaming for long periods) they start to fall apart. My current ones 5v dips super low when I play games.

I bought that PSU from ebuyer and returned it because it wasn't exactly quiet despite the description, could of been a faulty fan but it wasn't loud either. Couldn't find the db rating in the description. Meant to have good innards so was a disappointment.
Also I've the same MB and can't fault it but that's with a q6600 not one of the newer ones..

exactly, a lot of these PSU companies rate their stuff when it's turned off. So more than likely that 600watt psu someone buys is only 600 watts when it's turned off. The only PSU brand I trust is PC Power & Cooling. Everyone I know that has had the same 510watt one for the past few years is still pushing how it should. They also rate their wattage at 60C

He is right...
I would recommend a seasonic psu ~500-600 watt.
More than enough. My guess is that your system consumes about 300-350 W max.
Is there any good reason to go quadcore? I would buy a dualcore for now...

future proof. Dual core wasn't needed or used much when I bought my 4400. that was how long ago now. but instead of buying a single core then I bought dual core which is still outliving itself.

You need 500w max power supply for that rig. I wouldnt waste my money on psus you mentioned. Get Chieftech 500w PSU. I have 530w PSU and have much more things that i need to power up and all works very nice.
P.s. I wouldnt buy that case. Its not worth it imo but its up to you.

yeah.... but... future proof was always a bad idea when buying computer components... at least for me.
I mean, if you need quadcore now, buy one. If not... get dual core. You can push em further and they eat up less power - and stay cooler.
You can always upgrade cheap, when (or if) there is a reasonable amount of software, that makes use of more than 2 cores...

I'm a developer which is why I'm considering the quad, I'm a big fan of the "quad core is currently rather pointless" argument.. but the only exception to that rule is if someone is going to make use of the extra cores.. development is a good reason for that.
That is why I have stuck a dual and quad core build up.. haven't fully decided..
So currently people think I should change the PSU ? Can anyone recommend a better PSU for around the same sort of price? Anything else that needs to be changed? Someone mentioned the case.. what's wrong with it?

I'd still be careful with the PSU wattage and allow yourself some headroom. A seagate 7200.8 draws 2.5a from the 12v rail for example, and overclocking uses more power..
I'd go for 550w absolute minimum or slightly more if you want SLI.

Check out PC Power & Cooling. If you can look for a 510turbo watt. You can find em dirt cheap on ebay now and you don't really even need to worry about them being used, their built like tanks.
Otherwise look at their silencer series.

Who said that anything is wrong with that case? I said its not worth money imo. Learn to read maybe?

You should get Chieftec PSU. 500w is more then enough. Dont listen to people that dont know what are they talking about.I have 8 disks,8800GTX,Audigy 2 , sata & ide controller,4 gb of ram, WC, C2D,10 vents and whole other crap on 530 PSU and works like charm. I say Chieftec and you should get it if you dont want strange noises coming out of youre PC after couple of months. Case is complete miss for you if you have 5 disks. I said its not worth the money imo but if you like the looks of it get it. I never buy shit on looks only.

I hope you're not referring to me lol. I recommended he get a 550, or at least 600 for SLI, which I believe to be a good recommendation. He wants quad-core and I think it's 6 HDD's and I'm assuming he wants to OC.
Nothing worse than not being sure if you've got a good/powerful enough PSU when trying to diagnose hardware problems.
I'd agree that 500 should suffice tho, but I'd hate the PSU to be a limiting factor. I've 550 and wish it was slightly higher..
Advice to get a Seasonic was spot-on. I've also had good experience with Tagans.
With regards to the CPU, I'm sure we'll see quad used for more than encoding etc in the future and there is a marginal benefit in any case. Whether it justifies the difference in price of the two cpu's you're considering is another matter. When I chose between a e6750/6850 or a q6600 the price difference was so small it made the choice easy.
I haven't looked into how the p35 handles oc'ing the new intels but it would be worth finding out..

as i said - seasonic.
they build rockstable psus - up to 88% efficiency. They have been in the market for a very long time, built oem psus for huge companies.
I had them all... tagan, enermax, be quiet, etc.
seasonic convinced me. the psus are the most silent ones u can get.
Seasonic S12 or M12 >600 W for ~100 €
The S12 gives you 52A combined on the 12V rails.... more than enough...
a review:
