Quote: | Electronic Arts today announced that this summer will see the release of Battlefield Heroes, a free to play PC multiplayer shooter featuring a Team Fortress 2-like art style.
According to EA, the game will be easy to pick up and play, and among other things will feature character customization, matchmaking based on skill level, and a "deep online meta-game."
"We put a different twist on this Battlefield game going with the cartoon-style graphics and gameplay," said EA DICE senior producer Ben Cousins. "There's something here for all types of players--be it our core Battlefield fans or casual gamers. With the new online model, we will continually add new content to keep the game fresh and keep players engaged, while integrating player feedback in real time. As a game developer, it is such a cool new way to make games."
That new content won't be free, as Electronic Arts notes that the game will generate revenue through advertising and micro-transactions.
No screenshots were released, though the game is featured in the new issue of Games for Windows Magazine. |
Quote: | Ben Cousins, senior producer at Dice, told BBC News that no adverts would be appear in the game itself.
"They wouldn't work inside the fictional world. Instead, adverts will appear on the website and the 'front-end' of the game."
Gamers will be able to buy items which customise their appearance in the world, but will not be able to seek an advantage through buying weapons.
Mr Cousins said Battlefield Heroes was about exploring new revenue models as well as making a game more accessible.
Mr Cousins said EA expected 95% of people who played the game never to spend any money. |

What's so cool about beating a dead horse?
It'll be ad-supported and most likely pay-to-compete.

oh ya, this wasn't ripped off of TF2 the least bit. And it being EA giving a free game. You know they're up to something. EA doesn't give anything away.

You saw some mag cover art and decided it's ripped off TF2? We don't even know what will it look like exactly and even if it looks anything close to TF2 that'll be the only thing they have in common.

If it's good I don't see a problem with paying for advanced content. At this point we don't even know if paying players will compete with non-paying players.

It's obviously going to be something cheap and easy to throw out (whilst riding on the wave from TF2 comparisons) but who knows it might actually be a well made game, I mean the one thing missing from TF2 is vehicular combat and so on.

The reason they are making this 'free to play' and probably ad supported is because they know how much of a TF2 ripoff it is. No one would buy this piece of shit if it was normal retail price.
I can also guarentee the 'paid extra content' will be nothing be achievements like TF2 or BF2 allready has.
Avoid this game like the plague. It's a cheap attempt to ride on the success of TF2. I'd rather just go play BF1942 or TF2 depending on how I feel for the day. Not this fucking shit.
Not to mention i'm completely appalled at the lack of respect for WW2. Lets make the greatest war this world has ever seen a fucking comic-book joke. Stupid mother fuckers.

Unfortunately guys, that pic of the battlefield guy isn't a screenshot just a mag cover - you have no idea how it'll be rendered... Also, TF2 IS A XIII RIPOFF BECAUSE IT USES SIMILAR-TO-CELL-SHADED ANIMATIONS!
Give it a rest. The game will blow, but not because of the graphics.

Thanks but I'll avoid ignorant people like you instead and try the game out for myself before coming to any conclusions. We don't even have ANY SCREENSHOTS OR VIDEOS how do you know it's TF2 ripoff, just by looking at that mag cover art? You make it sound as if WW2 just happened yesterday. Do you know that over the years countless times WW2 was made into a joke in books, movies, comics and even games. Take a chill pill.

You gotta be blind not to realize the game has a cartoon flavour ala Team Fortress 2. No doubt EA is trying to ride on it's wave of popularity. For good or worse, time will tell.

Atleast read the news article:

Quote: |
The games has a "cartoon-feel" and has been made simpler to play, with more emphasis on participation and fun than skill and strategy.
|
It does also mention that the ads will not be in the game, and that the purchaseable items will be for looks only

Right, i'm ignorant because I state the fact that the game is going off of the new found popularity for 'Incredibles' esque graphics; and the fact that the game is also using the WW2 theme to also garner sales.
Take Glotis's wrench out of your ass and show some respect.

Realistically speaking, there's only so many art styles and only so many that work well or are cheap enough hardware-wise to use in video games.
At it's core Heroes is selling heroism and tanks and war, tf2 is a lot more casual and comical and less related to any real life theme beyond the desert-industrialist terrain. It's selling a different emotion.
On top of all this, EA is out there to make money! Wow, Surprise! Had you all fooled before, who thought they were out there to do anything else? I mean really! They have no investment in you, nor your enjoyment. They're going to pick and choose whatever sells the best.
