Hey guys, fed up with Tages preventing you from playing the newest games? Why don't you play a classic from when the games were better and the protections worse Smile

Talk about them here

Do you feel it's a golden oldie, or just a great somewhat recent game? That's basically the "threshold".

Halflife the first game.

A scene i remember is you coming out of a tunnel from inside the factory unto a halfcovered cave with sunlight coming into it, you jump down and instantly you can hear your feet on the dusty gravel and echo'es.

Now the reason i am explaining that scene is that the game as you all know came out in November 1998, the winter season, and just that scene brought me back to summertime, heat, playing outside, having fun. I remember being almost sad that winter had come and amazed that a game could make me feel like this Smile.

And of course it's a golden oldie, the first real game that captivated my imagination and enthusiasm for making it juuuust to the next scene Smile. It really was a leap from what had been made before and that game forever made me a FPS fan foremost.

So Halflife 1 is a Golden Oldie Smile.

But that's pretty subjective and I fear that for a whole section of the forum we need a more objective approach to reach something like a set of rules so that everybody can agree on it.

Yes, or it will run out of control. (see points made in thread kill.switch)

Agreed. We do need some set guidelines, but - IMO of course - they need to be objective. It's no good saying "only games made before 1995 can be classed as oldies" just as it's no good saying "A game made in 2007 should be classed as a golden oldie because it will last forever!!!"

Yeah I think the two most important things are:

1. Age; should there be a limit? I think generally yes, however, like with movies, some games are "instant classics". Not all games need to withstand the trials of time to be considered as such, but a moot point in time is needed.

2. Quality in terms of; reception (gamers vs. critics - think "box office hit" vs. "poor reviews", underdogs, etc), gameplay, graphics/sounds/all-that-technical-crap, story/immersiveness, standards, etc? (imo it's much easier to judge games from the 90s and early 2000 concerning what they did and didn't).

As said, objectivity is important. "Is this game really a classic?" "What sets or set it apart?" "Did it bring anything new to the table?" "Or did it use existing elements just _that_ well?" "Anything innovative in particular categories?" "Downfalls, like bugs/problem?" Also comparing games from the same year is interesting.
