So i got this HP compaq presario f700 laptop, its good for work and internet serfing, the problem is it came with Vista. The laptop is pretty underpowered, and a vista is a system hog, and some of my programs dont work with it, so i want to switch to xp, but i cant find those freaking drivers. Do they even make laptop drivers for xp or im stuck with vista?
Thanks.

Did it default to the Vista Basic theme? Or is it using Aero? Also how much memory did the laptop come with?

NOt really sure whats vista basic theme or aero since its my first time ever seeing it. But it has 2 Gbs of memory, but task manager say it takes about 40% of that. I wanna see if Red faction and call of duty gonna run better in xp.

It might not be due to the system being underpowered because I doubt hp would put an os on a system not equipped to run it. Might be a bad/incompatible program eating up resources.

Switching to XP is not something you should take lightly since the biggest problem is as you rightly anticipate, drivers. And not just one but almost every component you will have to find an equivalent xp driver. But hp doesn't offer xp drivers for systems sold with vista so you'll have to go on a quest to hunt down xp drivers for all your components and hope they work on your system since they weren't originally written for it.

Here's someone trying something similar on a different hp laptop. Scroll down a bit to see the number of drivers required to make the switch.

Vista shows more memory in use because it allocates more of it then XP. XP leaves unused memory alone while Vista makes use of it that's why it's at 40%. This is shown through it staying the same in proportion to the ram installed, so if you had 4 gigs it would still be consuming 40% and clear whats necessary for a big app.

Do you have all the flashy effects going on? The warping minimizing, etc? As swingman said most Laptops that come with Vista are well equipped to handle it.

I find Aero to be the biggest "slow down" factor, switching it off brings it closer to XP.

I bought the laptop from bestbuy, and it came with shit load of uneccassary programs installed. But the bastards did not give me a vista dvd, they made me do it myself. The problem is, you cant just install vista, you have to use a recovery dvd (3 dvds, which i had to make myself) but the stupid recovery cd doesnt just install vista, it installs 20-30 other programs that i have no idea wtf they do, and im afraid to unistall everything since the names are not very informative and my laptop will blow up if i unistall them, so it basicly reverts it to factory settings. I just wanted a clean install, and since i dont have vista dvd, and im not familiar with it, i thought i go back to xp, since i hear everything runs better on it. But the problem is, i cant find the drivers, i even called tech support and they said hp doesnt have them. So i guess i better learn vista, and maybe someday it'll be as good as xp.
About the effects, i do think i have them, but like i said im not familiar with vista, and have no idea how to turn it off, and how would i turn off this aero thingy?
The computer runs very well, and plays movies fine, but i tried to play cod1 and RF and it was pretty laggy. I expected that since computer is not that powerful, but i hear people say that xp has a boosted performance over vista, so i just wanted to see if the games do indeed run faster.

We got a few notebooks from HP just recently at work, nc61.. something. At first it appeard that the driver DVD is only for Vista, but we tried it with XP and the drivers for XP were also on it, which was strange because we couldn't make out where on the dvd they were supposed to be, we used the HP installation tool on the DVD, you can choose which driver and accessory software to install. Maybe the driver packages are generic for Windows XP and Vista?

I completely agree on the whole recovery dvd thing, making these DVD's was really annoying. With business models they could just supply them, at least the driver DVD was in the box.

Well if you couldn't run COD well the only thing I'd question are the specs of the laptop. Do you know what graphics card it has? Because if it's anything integrated there is no chance of gaming besides minesweeper on that thing.

Those 'customised' recovery cds are a drag on the system especially at startup. I had a compaq notebook which had so many 'help' and 'support' programs installed that it bogged the startup process.

The xp recovery cd had the files for xp in a sub-folder and the drivers. It was not very difficult to make a bootable disc for the system. Maybe something like that can be done with vista too.

I made 3 dvds with the recovery tool (lol they wanted 16 cds)
When i open the dvds in my XP comp First has three folders, BOOT, PRELOAD, SOURCES.Second just PRELOAD, and third has PRELOAD AND TOOLS, all of the folders contain some files that i cannot open with anything, no exes, setups or anything of that kind, just files.
WhoKnows where did you find that HP installation tool, was it on laptop installed when you got it?
THe first thing i did was go run-msconfig and disable all that crap, so it starts up a bit quicker.
My Videocard is Nvidia Geforce 7000M and AMD TL-58 @ 1.9Ghz (is it even possible to buy a laptop video card and install it yourself, never owned one before)?, as far as i could tell COD was playable, but that was the training mission and not a lot of stuff was happening, its probably gonna chug. Like i said i wasnt buying this for gaming, i just wanted to see performance of Vista vs Xp. The laptop came with Sims life stories preinstalled, so i guess i should be able to run it.

You could try looking for benchmarks for your vga under XP and see what kind of performance you get in vista. Any difference might not be due to vista alone. All the extra factory-installed programs could also be a factor.

1. You could make a partition on your current setup and install xp on it and dual boot.

http://www.ehow.com/how_2109451_vista-machine-adding-xp-windows.html

OR

2. You could try getting Vista drivers for your laptop and doing a clean install of Vista (with a borrowed vista disc Wink ) using your key and then install the drivers. Hopefully that won't black-list your key but check before you take such a drastic step.

Nah i'll just keep vista, i have my main pc for gaming, dont need another one. Laptop is primary for school. But just now i tried RF and it ran very well on 1024x768, so i guess its not THAT bad. And again, is it possible to replace the video card on a laptop or im stuck with what i have? Vista is not that horrible, i like the look of it, its just a resource hog, and i dont understand some weird changes from Xp that dont make sense, but other than that i didnt have a single crash, and it does what i want it to do. I just need time to assimilate myself with it. But thanks for the help.

It was on the driver dvd which came with the notebook, it's not on the recovery dvds. We used our own xp cd and then the driver dvd. It installs all drivers and applications at once, but you can choose which ones.

Maybe you can order one of those dvd's, i mean i couldn't find any drivers for your notebook on hp's website, what are you supposed to do if you loose your recovery dvd's.

lol im fucked if i lose, it tells you that. You can only make one copy of those haha. Nah but i think (i hope) you can order them. Yeah there were no dvds with the laptop, just the manual on how to make those recovery dvds. Serves me right, shouldve researched before buying it, but its really not that bad, it does exactly what i want it to do, so its all good. I guess vista is not selling that well so M$ is shoving it down our throats, and payed a pretty penny to HP for such bs.
