Just bought a nec-2500A DVD-RW burner today and got one f**king
problem. I just can't burn higher than 2.4x speed in ner0. Tried
everything, downloaded latest VIA 4in1 (hyperion) drivers, mad firmware
update to 1.07 (official not herrie's hacked one).
But could it be the IDE-cable I'm using (just an old 40-pin), so do I need a 80-pin ide connector?
BTW nero only gives me the option to burn at 2,4 independent of having
already a dvd in the drive or not, so it must come from the drive, the
cable or nero.

thx for any help

My specs are:

Athlon XP 2400+, Asus A7V333 with latest non-beta BIOS, 512 MB DDR
333 (PC2700) in one bar, Creative GFX 5900 (XT) 256MB, Soundblaster
Audigy 1.0 Player (latest drivers), Toshiba SD 1812 on sec. slave and the
NEC 2500A on sec. master (both on 40pin-ide-cable), one Seagate
Barracuda (28,5GB) and one Seagate Barracuda (80GB).

What version of nero are you using? Have you tried to update it,

It has nothing to do with the 40-pin ide cable, my NEC ND1100A is also
connected with this kind of cable and i can burn without problems at 4x.

Oh, and i forgot, are your drives running in UDMA mode or only PIO?

There is a little tool from ahead, wich changes the registry. It changes nero, so the possible writing speeds are read directly out of the firmware of the dvd-rw. Its called Dynamic Write Speed.

Here is the link

http://www.nero.com/us/631940689865851.html

You can also try another program like winoncd and see if it works with 4x or 8x.

thanks for the hint. Tried it. But it still only shows: Maximum, 2.4, 2, 1x speed
Maybe the drive is corrupted.
I'm thankful for any futher help

Have you tied a different make of disks?
I had that problem with verbatim dvd+r disks but everything else I've tried I get the correct speeds for my drive

The only thing left, i can think of is the ASPI driver. Try the one from ahead.

If this doesnt help, your drive may be damaged. You could install it on another pc and check if the problem persists, or send it back to get a new one.

I just checked it out. If there is no dvd+r in my drive, nero only gives me 2,4x speed. If i insert a verbatim 4x disk, i can choose 4x, without a disk i can only choose 2,4x. So maybe it is the disks. Are the disk you are using on the recommended disk list from nec?

i used ritek r01-discs (Bestmedia Platinum DVD+R 8x). Aspi drivers seem to be already ok according to Nero InfoTool. Maybe the reason is that they are DVD+R

BTW gonna visit a friend of mine to test the drive in a different PC, so I'll get back to you asap.

THX and still open for further hints

either the media doesn't support burning at higher speeds than 2.4x, or you need to update your drive's firmware

thx for the help, it was the f**king media (The Ritek-R01) that wasn't supported. Tested with another disc (Verbatim) and it allows now up to 4x with that disk. Gonna try another 8x disc today to see, if also 8x can be used.

and @tcghost, just try to read a whole thread, I already got the latest firmware on my drive.

Take a look at the list from NEC before buying new ones Wink

http://www.necd.de/software/1446_Media_List_for_8x_DVD_Writer.pdf

I always use Verbatim and never had a single problem.

I got something like that too. My sister's comp has a dvd+r drive. A couple of weeks ago I had to reinstall XP on it. After that I bought some new dvd+r's. 25 pack from AVB. It says 4x but only burns at 2.5. It's not a big deal though. I can live with it.
