PostPosted: Tue, 23rd Jun 2015 01:58    Post subject: Windows 10 compatibility thread
I've done some testing of Windows 10 preview build 10130 tonight, specifically in regards to legacy compatibility of games. I included a fair few "odd" games that were coded with very dated standards and old winapi that I didn't expect to work. At all.
If not specified, the games are the Steam version.

My results are as follows. In no particular order.

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic (GoG)
Works even with Direct3D mode, no skipping or lagging.

Anachronox (GoG)
Works great, if a bit fast rendering in the menus.

Arcanum of Steamworks and Magic Obscura (GoG)
No issues, works fine with high res patch.

Baldurs Gate 2 (GoG)
Works without issue, even when turning on 3d effects for the icewind dale spell mod.

Planescape Torment (GoG)
Removed the included d3dfix, then innstalled with widescreen and ui overhaul plus all the standard unfinished business and tweak mods. Works without issue, not even characters walking backwards as you'd usually see.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack (GoG)
Prompted me to install activate directplay when I tried to launch the exe, I accepted. Both the basic game and the expansion worked without issue. Since it prompted me to install directplay I started wondering if mp worked - it didn't in windows 7. So I setup a virtual machine with the same Windows 10 build and yes, I could play multiplayer between my two versions of the game. Awesome!

Divine Divinity
Worked without issue.

Total Annihilation Commander Pack (GoG)
Works fantastic! - I always had an annoying issue on Windows 7 where the screen would blink every 20 seconds or so, it drove me nuts. Thats gone!

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance
Had to restart the game after selecting resolution, after restart it worked fine.

Geneforge 1
Had to enable Windows XP SP2 compatability then it worked fine.
Also if you don't know this one, play it. It's like Fallout with magic, but only made by one guy and his wife. Still it's incredibly deep with lots of C&C.

Jagged Alliance 2
Did not work, at all. I installed wined3d draw from nongnu.org and it worked fine.

Fallout 1+2
Both worked great with the timemsync patches.

Thief Gold
I did not expect this one to work in is basic installation without community patch. But it did, in it's 800x600 16bit glory.

Thief 2
Same as Thief Gold.

Gothic 2 Gold

Worked without issue, even in 1600x1200 16bit. D3D11 patch is a must though.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

No issue worked out of the box.

Nethergate: Resurrection
Works great. Check it out, it's an excellent rpg

Dominions 4
Best 4x game Razz Works fine.

Soulbringer
Now I know this should not be working. But it is. I also tested this with Windows 8.1 a few months ago and it failed miserably. Works great on Windows 10. What trickery is this?!

RollerCoaster Tycoon 2: Triple Thrill Pack
This would crash upon exit for me with Windows 7, and skip a bit at high res on large maps. Works great on Windows 10, doesn't crash on exit...

Railroad Tycoon 2: Platinum
No issues, works.

Might and Magic VI - VIII (GoG)
All worked with the high res patch, no blinking screen or anything in D3D mode. As I got in Windows 7.

Wizardry VIII (GoG)
Cannot get this to work, installed nglide manually, tried other renderers and compatability modes, it just would not launch.

Wizardry VIII
Unlike the GoG version, the steam version worked right away. I suspect it might have to do with it setting up nglide on your system instead of being bundled with the libraries.

Knights of Honor
Works fine.

UFO Aftermath
Works fine.

It seems like a lot of classic ddraw titles run fine? In that case, can you do me favour? Run an RPG Maker 2000/XP/VX/VX Ace title in fullscreen mode and see if it's laggy/dropping frames Smile

http://www54.zippyshare.com/v/biOjN9Iw/file.html

This one should be quick and easy to test, I already included a save file so just load and try that. Play it in full screen, scroll left and right, then alt-enter and see if it's significantly smoother in a window. Thanks Epsi!

Dont take that as the "real" truth, even if games work maybe they wont work in the final. they are skill working on stuff. as an example: one build 2 months ago made almost every source game and borderlands or so crash, but all these titles worked before.

think they working again, havent checked. so keep on checking titles in newer builds when they got released

No issues with that. Didn't find it to be smoother in a window, was pretty smooth in full screen as well. Also played from the start until after the first battle where you go with violet and scott to their hideout.
It just worked out of the box, or rar, as it were Razz

Thats my primary concern with this OS, as they can, and will silently update it and add to it over time, and you've no say so. I'm not sure a running release OS is a good thing for MS.

Seriously? You're not messing with me? RM titles are known problematic on Win8/8.1 due to the change of the new WDDM.. full screen they are laggy, 30fps to the native 60fps kind of laggy, it's absolutely repeatable and cannot be fixed without full engine updates or scripts that force borderless fullscreen. It really runs smooth (or, as you say, "no smoother in window")? Aw man, I hope you're right Very Happy I play a lot of RM titles and I hate this fucking "Progression®" shit that has crippled the engine in Win8/8.1. If MS has this sorted in Win10 I'll be ecstatic!

Thanks Epsi!

sure you can say no, just deactivate the windows updates. (and bla yes i know core version has missing switch in the ui, just a simple registry entry will most likely change that. and who uses non pro? ofc i dont need the features but i only have pro keys^^). if you want the "free" insider build after rtm u are forced to update to every newer build cause the old one will expire.

if rtm is running fine im staying on that even when new major updates come out atleast for a few days to check out what others say.

I was really quite surprised myself as I noted, many titles that had issues or wouldn't work on 8.1 or even 7 works fine on 10.

@Janz I will wait and see I suppose, right now I'm just interested in seeing how old crap works on the new crap Razz

Jagged Alliance 2 had/has the same issue on windows 8, so I'm not too surprised the same issue popped up in windows 10.

Hey, can you download and install Monster Truck Madness 2 please?

Make sure you select Direct3D in the graphic option, start a race and type FRAME to have the FPS come out and let me know what it says. I can't get over 25 fps in Win 8.1.

Link:

http://mtm2.com/~mtmg/mtm2.html

You might need to do some hoops to get it working. The website explains for Win 7 and 8 but obviously not for 10.

Btw, the website says you need to download the patch but you don't. Not unless you want to play online so you can safely ignore that step.

Game is locked at 640x480 (you need to use a wrapper to increase resolution). The only thing that matters is if you run it using Direct3D and NOT software renderer (software renderer bypasses directx7 and uses the CPU instead of GPU so it's not affected).
With that being said that looks like Direct3D.

And da,m, if you're hitting 60fps I assume that's the vsync kicking in? That means that maybe, just maybe Microsoft fixed whatever they did wrong in the Win 8.1 DirectDraw emulation (and earlier Win 10 builds)!!!!!!!!!!!!

It does if MS fixes their boneheaded changes that they only made because of "Progression©" Razz Breaking ddraw, and other older APIs used by older programs/engines, was just pointless, it helped nobody and hindered people that still enjoy classic gaming.

This is not 'my' thread though. I mean it's a thread for everyone to post about compatibility issues or successes on Win10. So we keep that seperate from general OS talk in the other thread.

Windows 10 breaks and won't boot if I try install nvidia win 10 display drivers. So much time wasted on this.
Hmm not just that. Even windows update fails and it refuses to boot. Left with black screen. Windows 10 hates me
