Some years ago they weren't the greatest but from a few IT friends I have I've heard they've improved their quality quite a bit and come with 5 year warranty's.

So anyone here vouch for em? I'll always love WD the best but I might be able to score a seagate external cheaper.

Also while I have this thread open, what's a good ATI brandr. I have had good experience with visiontek but that was back on the radeon 9250. Going after an x1950 Pro AGP for my gf's computer (my old system). Has an ATI x800GTO in it and when I bought that card I thought it WAS supposed to be good lol. Card is one of thee worst cards I've ever had. Overheats for doing NOTHING.

My Seagate experience:

My system disk is a 80 gb Seagate drive. I bought it five years ago, and back then i used it kinda like a portable drive (open case for easy removal, used to bring it along to friends with fast broadband connection). Hasnt ever given me problems. Never. I´ve had two 120 gb WD´s crash, one Maxtor and one IBM Deathstar.

So yeah, i like my Seagate drive Smile

Well I have 6 Seagate HDD's. 2x160gb that I've had 3 or 4 years now, 2x320gb thats a year or so old, 2x500 that are pretty new, working just fine. heck my old 30gb Seagate is still working great. Never had a problem with any Seagate disc to be honest.

Behold his GLORY! Bow for the technical master!

Tbh I always thought they were highly regarded, at least since their 7200.7 series which is still going strong for me after about 5 years..

Imo seagate and WD make the best drives, and my personal experience would place them over WD, 'cept they don't make raptors Smile

whats the budget you had inmind for the new ATI ? i myself ordered a HD3870 with standard overlock and custom cooler from powercolor.

EDIT: im retarded i should read the whole post ... anyway PCB wise they are almost always the same , but can differ in cooling solution , i hope you can find 1950pro AGP still where you live , if not 2600XT is very comparable in price and performance , also on AGP , but i dont know about custom coolings on those , PCI E has some really nice versions OCed and with GDDR4 for like $110

Seagate drives are wonderful.

I would probably go for Sapphire or HIS.

ABIT
ASUS
Connect3D
Diamond
GeCube (Info-Tek)
GIGABYT
MSI Computer Corp.
Palit/YUAN
Sapphire Technology
Tul Corporation
Visiontek

You can't really go wrong with ATi's board partners, I mean Asus, Gigabyte, etc. About half of them come with huge bundles (Asus) others are more bare min. Only thing you need to look out for is each ones warranty length and where they handle RMA's from. I think Palit requires you to ship them to China, I dunno.

i read with diamond being one of the few real US companies they give pretty good support , i never needed any whatsoever so i wouldnt know.

about saphire i read good things also from ppl in europe , no questions asked , just ship it to the UK etc...

but again you prob dont want a noisy or hot card , so i would check if there are any with good custom coolers , lucky the HD3870 series come with really good stock cooling for a change

Shes limited to AGP. It's my old 754 Socket rig (was good for it's time Razz) but she WAS on a pentium III computer so this is hell of an upgrade for her lol. She loved RTCW and FEAR etc so that x800GTO is already showing it's shit. I've found the x1950Pro on ebay pretty cheap around here and was originally gunna get the 7900GS AGP but read around the x1950Pro whiped the floor with it in most games. Is the x2600XT even on AGP?

Anywho, thanks for the feedback guys Very Happy

2600xt is on AGP , its sorta the same performance as the 1950pro , but speficly in shader heavy games aka newer ones .

all depends how cheap you can get the 1950pro , i "think" 2600xt goes for like 90 bucks for standard edition AGP on newegg.

EDIT : also remember when you look at performance benchmarks of the 2600xt , they were done with drivers during the summer or before even , since then performance has gone up by 30% for many games

You know better then anyone how cheap a Dual-Core CPU + Mobo can be had now days. Especially 939, carry over the ram done deal. There are X2 3800's for like $35 online right now, finding an appropriate mobo is a snap. Then factor in that buying a $125 PCI-E card is proportional to paying for a non-existent $600 AGP card when you compare price:performance.

AGP cards are rip offs.

All my HDs, WDs, Maxtors, and Seas, only due to beeing obsolite were mothballed.
Im running Seagate now, and seems fine, but a couple of weeks ago, I hade a strange incident when I left a game, and my Desk top icons were gone. Then it wouldnt boot. For some reason the HD got bad blocks in it, which happend to wack the cpu driver. After scan disk everything is fine again. Anywho,
Best of luck

kewl, I'll look into the 2600 than. What brand should I aim for? Visiontek is the only brand I've had good experience with. The x800GTO was a Sapphire Techbut has a huge overheating issue, dunno if it's the brand or just the card series. I really know nothing about ATI anymore.

[edit]

Buddy just told me Diamond has been around forever.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103048

VisionTek (who I know is good)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814129092

I usually disreguard the reviews as the people who type those reviews don't know a CPU from PSU.

That card good with it's heat?

[edit 2] The hell with the 2600, read some comparisons against the 8600GT and performed about the same, and the 8600 sucked horribly, 7900GS kicked it's ass. Might as well just get the 7900GS on AGP

Although the Radeon HD 2600 PRO card is much newer than the Radeon X1950 PRO, it really falls behind in almost everything. It's slower, not much cheaper, louder and even though its part of the HD series, it doesn't support HDMI. It's main advantage over previous generations of AGP cards is that it's small, which would lead to it being perfect for media PC's, were it capable of all HD media features and were it not so loud. Sapphire have had a good go at putting together a more modern AGP solution, but for gamers there is little to be gained over a Radeon X1950 PRO, so pay the extra tenner and get that instead.

That's the PRO rather than the XT but reading bits and pieces it's clear both should be avoided in most cases

I'd go for the x1950 or 7900/7950..

To Stefan F: First of all you have a go at other members for giving out what you think is bad advice when it wasn't. Now you go and give out bad advice yourself! At least you took the time to reply I guess..

i love seagate. Great performance, great reliability, pretty noiseless and not getting too warm in comparison. I always recommend them because of the great experience i had with their drives and the bad i had with others (had about five of those ibm deathstars Very Happy and some others die on me (samsung, wd,...))
