kinda at my wits end to be honest... some games just keep locking up my system - not just crashing the game or anything, but freezing the pc.

and its always the same, its never a crash that restarts the system, it always just suddenly freezes. i can usually still hear music in the background, but everything is completely locked up - i can not alt tab or ctrl alt del my way out of it, i need to restart the system.

kane and lynch
gears of war
crysis

these are the games its happening on

crysis is a legit copy so its got nothing to do with a bad patch or anything.

the time it takes for a game to lock up are not consistant... sometimes it wont lock up, sometimes 20 minutes some times 50+ minutes.

looking at the list of games, those are all games for windows titles right? i was wondering if this is some reason why the games are arsing up? but i played witcher all the way through which is games for windows as well and it never locked up.

ive been able to play all of cod4 without a system freeze, and nfs pro street hasnt locked up EVER either.

this problem only happens during games... my pc never freezes at the desktop or during movies or anything, its only in games.

and yes my video card drivers are up to date.

hope someone can help or offer atleast some ideas of how i can find the problem or something i can do to get around this... the only thing i can think of is to try new motherboard drivers and maybe a scandisk and defrag? but any help greatly appreciated. thanx.

Maybe it is related to the graphics card. I would try underclocking the graphics card and testing for a few hours.

card isnt overclocked, and i know the card isnt overheating or anything...and like i said, it only happens on those 3 games, not every game i play. thanx for the suggestion though.

Have you run a memtest?

What kind of sound card do you have?

PC: i7-4790k @ 4.4, 32GB @ 2400, Nvidia 1080TI FE, 2 TB Crucial MX500 SSD
Nintendo Switch SX OS Pro / PS4 Pro 5.05 Hen/Mira / PS3 Modded / Wii Modded / 360 Pre-Wave4 mod

i spose i can run memtest overnight but like i said, its only happening on those 3 games

at the moment im using my motherboard onboard sound, because my soundcard was broken and im waiting for a replacement, but i had these problems regardless of my soundcard.

I'm not sure about Kane & Lynch, Crysis and Gears take a lot of ram. It's probably not that but worth a check and easy to do.

I only asked about the soundcard because it sounded like you may be having a sound looping issue. If your sure it's not sound related then fine, but i would check for a new sound driver as well. Your PC is pretty new right? What brand PSU and Wattage?

yeah i have the creative labs xtremegamer card, with latest web updates - its weird because the sound isnt looping during the crash, its still playing - basically any in-game sounds will stop, but any background music will continue to play normally.

but ill give memtest a shot.

I bet this is a heat related problem. Either your graphics card or CPU are running hot for some reason.. open up the case and get rid of all the dust and check the fans are functioning properly.

yep done that, gpu is running at around 60 degrees which for the 8800 is perfectly fine... i wouldnt think its a cpu heating problem.. like i said, cod 4, witcher, nfs prostreet, all with graphical settings maxed out, never caused the problem... but ill keep an eye on cpu temp.

You have 8800 GTX or some other card? Because 60c for 8800 GTX is to low. How did you measure temps? It could be bad ram or drivers for gfx.

Had this with my AMD 4000+, and it turned out to be CPU heating. PC would completely lock up with some noise coming out of the sound card.
I ended up replacing my PSU and memory before thinking about the CPU overheating. Finally just replaced my stock heatsink with a Zalman one and all lockups went away.
So I think this is the problem here.

perhaps i need to redo my heatsink? i replaced my stock with ultra 120, so maybe redoing it is a good idea.

is there any program that i can run in the background that will tell me after a crash, what happened or what my temps were etc, which might help me understand the problem?

nakitu, my 8800gtx is around 60 when idle not under load... and i was under the impression that was normal for that card - i use nvidias own monitoring software to check the gpu temp.

Oh so you idle at 60. Well idle tells us nothing. If you want to test if the problem is in gfx then download atitool and do artifact scan for 1h. You will see temps and if card has any problems. I still think its gfx drivers or ram problem. Here is a link to app.

well that was my first assumption, being that these are all games for windows games - perhaps witcher (being a GFW game) didnt crash because it doesnt use live i guess... but i thought the 'crashing to desktop' was the only major error these games had - i didnt think that total system lockups are part of the package as well... that'd be a huge weight off if thats what it was, and patches could fix the issues...

nakitu, did the atitool test, artifact scan for an hour like you said - zero errors, and a temp of around 79 degrees.

next i spose i should put memtest on my usb stick and run that and check my memory?

I think if it was G4WL, you'd have got a BSOD and not a hard lockup with stuff coming out of your sound card. Try opening the case and removing dust, if any. I know my Tuniq Tower has to be cleaned periodically.

Another thing, check if you can toggle num/caps lock.

i completely cleaned my entire case about 2 weeks ago... every bit of dust was removed from the fan and the structure of my heatsink.... dust isnt the problem, only thing i can think of is that i might need to redo my heatsink.. take it off, clean up the base, reapply the paste... i think ive read that a pull instead of a push fan configuration for my ultra120 gives better results?

is it worth lapping it, or not really... ive never done it before, so naturally a little hesitant, but i think im confident enough to do it if the rewards are worth it...

but yeah, dust isnt a problem in my case.

and yes i can toggle num and caps...

If you can toggle num and caps then it's software. Reinstall windows.
