|
 |
Hey guys,
Thought I'd let you in on my latest build. Been about 2 years since I've made my own box, so the upgrade is going to be fairly significant.
The specs will be as follows (waiting on my video cards still).
Intel Q6600
Thermalright Extreme120 Cooler + Scythe Fan
Asus P5K-E/Wi-fi
2x2gb OCZ Platinum Performence
NZXT Lexa Blackline Case
2xAMD HD3870 in Crossfire (I'll explain)
OCZ GameXstream 700W PSU
2x500GB WD Sata Drives
Saitek Eclipse II
Razer Copperhead Anarchy
Got 2 3870's from work for $400 total. Got them @cost I game at 1920x1080 so dual video cards seemed like a viable solution.
Total package ran me 1100ish.
200 Gift card from work, selling old box for 300 and intel retail edge mobo+vista for 100. Out of pocket cost me $500. Grats me.

If you'll note, I haven't upgraded my own box in 2 years I got a Q6600@$100 from intel directly and could get $200 worth of stuff from work on a gift card + 3870's @200 per. I mean... It was all pretty much there ready to go!
I plan on playing multiplayer COD4, Unreal 3 and playing through crysis. I also plan on rocking Age of Conan in the new year, which will require a decent pc to run@max.

i'm not saying it's a bad thing, i upgraded recently too [really dunno why i did it but still] it's just nothing really worth playing for me on pc which i can't get for 360
and we all know how it's pain in the ass to get something running, perfomance, drivers, cracks etc
for me pc gaming died completely as it was before about a year ago
i just realized how easy it is just to burn and enjoy the game, when on pc u have to think about compatibility and patches not to mention paint in the ass protection
btw Age of Conan will be out for consoles too, where u don't have to worry about running it on max and so on

yes quad cpus are pretty useless for gaming right now, same as dual core was when it was out [still some games not supporting it], u may have compatibility issues as well

Man.. I can't tell if this is jealousy.. my rig is solid. I know this..
I had an xbox 360, and sold it a month after I got it. Console gaming sucks dick.

Wasn't aware.. I guess another Nforce user gets the ignore from Phluxed
On another note - the quad core stuff.. I've not run into much in terms of compat issues at work... I heard the same argument when dual-core came out. Should be ok I'd assume.

Yep! Got a really nice scythe high air density fan for it as well. Does a great job blowing the air off. Nothing but pleased with the quality.
Can cool the CPU passively....!

Yea would like to know that as well. I had to skip the Thermalright Extreme120 as it would never fit my case (Lian Li 1100B) So i went for the Enzotech Ultra-X, will install it later today...sort a hate to unscrew, unplug, replug, fiddle with cables etc...
Anyhow, would be cool to hear what speed and temps you get with the 120!
The Enzotech is sort a level with the 120 in many reviews, so would be interesting to compare.

Cheers!. I had a sort a set back...well almost
The fracking Enzotech wont fit my case (Lian Li 1100B) as there is a partition wall between the PSU and the MOBO compartment (Lian Li has the mobo up and PSU down...weird layout maybe but...) And that darn heat sink sticks out like 5mm to much...anyhow, I installed my old Sctythe Infinity with 2 fans (I never used it as I thought it was to big) I mounted it like this...
Anyho...running E6600@3.4Ghz now at Idle@43-44, CRYSIS @ 52-53... That will do me just fine
will do some Orthos testing etc...but later.
Just as a footnote...this operation took me a good 5h. Taking mobo out, realizing the Enzo would not fit, cleaning the Scythe Ninja (orig Heat sink) NO GOOD TEMPS!!!!, Panicking....thinking, dissemble ALL!, thinking...remembering the Infinity....rushing to the attic....thinking...adding 2 fans and mounting the SOB!...cables, cables and more cables...AGAIN!

i dunno whats with the quadcore hype , cause thats what it is , if you are a gamer , dual core will do the job , you can get a faster dual core which is cheaper at the same time then your q6600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115028
and the above one is about the same pricing ( since i think thats the price you think a new cpu is worth ) but dual core and faster in everything but pure number crunching , video editing etc.
