 |
Hello,
since more and more games require XP SP2 (or Vista) I did another try of installing SP2 on my XP (SP1).
No success - I tried an update and even a fresh install with a WinXP CD with integrated SP2. After installation and reboot the machine crashes and restarts at once as soon as the XP starting logo comes to screen. XP sp1 works without any problem (since many years).
The strange thing is that I am able to boot in safe mode after the sp2 install and crash. In safe mode I am able to remove SP2 again and then XP is working like before.
So I presume the "core files"(kernel) of XP SP2 are working, otherwise it would not even be possible to boot in safe mode.
Is there any way to find out why its crashing? Is XP able to log the driver loading process to find out which driver (if any) may cause the crash? What Windows core files may be affected if SP2 can be started in safe mode, but not in normal mode? May it be useful to remove any hardware drivers from device manager before trying to install SP2?
I tried Vista, too (its working), but my games run about 25-50% slower than with XP (and I have some sound problems) so I dont want to use it if its not necessary.
System: Athlon 64 3200, 1,5 gigs ram, Nvidia 7900 512 mb
any advice?
thx

i couldnt even get XP to install on one of my old mainboards and only found out ages later, that it didnt like that i had the floppy-disk disabled in bios. It worked fine after i enabled the controller (although no actual drive was present).
So what is the mainboard and what drivers does it need? Are your drives perhaps on a raid controller, or does your bios need upgrading? Have you tried dis- or en-abling acpi in bios? Have you tried downclocking and / or enabling / disabling controllers in bios?
