I think you may have a loose/faulty memory stick or there is a problem with the mother board which causes a freeze every now an then.
1) Check the connectivity of all the parts inside the computer
2) Try taking out a memory stick to see if it's a faulty one
3) Try going to bios and check if everything is in order and reset the factory defaults.

hmm, sounds strange. Try the following:
1. Remove the battery from the mobo for a few minutes.
or
2. I assume it is an AGP card you are using? If so, try to replace it with a PCI
card and see if that works.

and if that doesn't work, maybe try a monitor with dvi output. (if your card has the dvi input of course)

What OS is he running?
if it's an older OS (or maybe even with newer ones) it may not adapt to the computer's frequency ranges...
I'd suggets booting with a monitor that works, right click desktop, properties, settings, advanced, and in monitor, change the frequency to something like monitor default, or pick one that is listed as working for the monitor you wish to plug in.
You might also want to check the manufacturer's website for help and/or drivers of some sort.
