Hey guys,
As some of you know, I work for a National Computer Company and there are some perks to the job. I have access to computer parts (@cost) and deals from our companies partners. One of them is Intel. I am part of the Retail Edge Program and can get the following bundle for $215

Intel® Core™2 Quad Q6600 processor

* 2.4 GHz, 1066 MHz Front Side Bus, 8MB L2 Cache

Intel® Desktop Board DG33TL Media Series

* Delivers better performance and capabilities for multimedia creation and enjoyment

* Fully supports Microsoft* Windows Vista*

Windows Vista* Home Premium Edition

I also got a gift card for $200 from here. We don't have the best components but we can get brand name video cards @cost. Looking at an HD2900 or a 8800GTS or GT. I know that motherboard isn't great, but I'm not looking to overclock, so it seems stable enough.
I can get Kingston ram for $25ish per gig. Probably get 2gb. Now what I'm wondering is what do you guys think about in terms of Video Card? I'm hoping to run Age of Conan in the near future.

I have a 37" 1080P as my primary monitor. Gimme some advice on parts, I've fallen out of the game these days.

get the 8800GT, it's about on par with the GTS and about 100 bucks less, but if your going to play at those resolutions that monitor will have I'd get the GTX or ultra

Would the HD2900 be sufficient?

Could be sufficient for Age of Conan, but I really suggest you get a 8800 GT. it's only 220-250$ and has better performance than any ATI card out right now.

It only came out a few days ago so it's not widely available yet but trust me, that card is worth it, nothing even comes close in terms of price/performance ratio.

+1 for the 8800GT, it really kicks the shit out of a 8800GTS 640mb.

While the 8800GT is a good card, he's got 37" LCD, in which case if he wants to be able to play on a resolution that high, the GT will start to bog down, for those resolutions he's gunna want the GTX, Ultra. And phluxed, honestly I wouldn't touch anything by AMD at this moment. the 2900 series got raped by nvidia and draw in more power and put out more heat than is necessary.

Not too mention nvidia said their remaking the 8800 series on the new chip so I would for that to be done and get the GTX/Ultra of that when it's out

Welll then, if not a GT, then a GTX or Ultra is the only way to go.

My largest concern is financial. I basically have $500ish of my own money to spend, if that. With the cpu+mobo taking $210 of that, leaves me with $290 of my own money + 200 from my gift card for the rest of the tower. I can definately pull it off as I'll get most @cost, but still, a GTX might be pricey. I was able to play Unreal 3 pretty decently on my 7800GT... I definately can wait to buy it all. Maybe waiting for the new Nvidia chipset is the best way to go and maybe slowly just peice it together over time.. like get my RAM and case now or whatever.

The intel retail edge will last until february and if I continue doing the chip gaining stuff, I'll be eligible for the Q6700 instead of the 6600 in the same package for $30 more.

yeah.. seriously, there is no better card for the money. get a 8800 GT and be happy.
If you can find one that is, they're getting sold like crazy and will soon be out of stock everywhere.
You can even play Crysis on High with that thing.

What res is native for that monitor? I wouldn't be comfortable playing games on anything bigger then a 24'. I don't think the performance is there at this point in time. It was when the GTX came out though. And i'm talking about the 3rd and 4th quarter of this year, games have been choking even the 8800GTX.

1920x1070.

It's a gorgeous screen and I wouldn't go smaller if someone gave me a monitor.

I'm expecting Crysis to run and Age of Conan.. that's pretty much my wishlist.

And obviously anything is going to be a significant upgrade. Money IS an issue here folks, please read all the posts before spewing out the same rhetoric I read constantly.
