Sort of... i suppose the "any player" part is correct, but it changes when it comes to media
Some simply refuse to read some brands, others have issues, some brands are too damn faulty and cause problems along the way.
I've got 3 and they all give have issues, the Grundig doesn't even start some movies (others freeze the player completely), the LG 'bumps' on errors and speeds up the movie the next seconds to compensate, the Clatronic freezes completely and resumes after the errors.
It's a matter of you finding out the right media for yours, for now i stick with Memorex, Pleomax and MMore.
As a suggestion: why not a DVD/DivX player, there are some good ones around, the price is similar, and if you need subtitles, you'll just have to do some research (MediaTek chipsets are the best)

Thx for the answer. Well the problem is we have to distribute quite a lot of DVD-Rs with short videos on it and we want to make sure any player will play them. Yes of course they'd play on PC but playback on standalone players is also a requirement.

Kommando: I don't know about that, i think a Region 5 player won't read a Region 1 DVD, but it will probably read a Region Free DVD. But then again, i'm not sure...
Vodka: If you mean to distribute short-videos, i guess long-term reliability is not an issue, try and find some group reviews for DVD's, choose those within your price range, with less error margins, less jitter and so on... and burn away. I remember the Riteks/Verbatim ( MC004 code)were damn good, damn cheap and damn hard to find.

No can do, at least the previous source. I'll quickly explain why, authorities raided P2P sites like crazy, and the biggest one here (a E2DK forum) shut itself down before someone did, the database was deleted. Anyway, that review would be written in Portuguese, i never was much into much detail with media, but i remember all the fuss about MC004 Riteks, everybody ordered from here:

I did a quick search, this one seems ideal to look for a review:
