Im looking for, preferebly a documentary or a series of them, on world history. That include things like

- Wars. WWI & II, Cold war, Vietnam etc
- The space race
- The nuclear bomb, testing and relating info
- Scientific discoveries in general

Heh, that mostly war-related things, but anything goes, really.

I know its alot, but im not looking for something that goes deep into each subject, just goes through what has happened the last 100 years.. Is there anything like this? Or do i have to download many documentaries for each and every subject?
Tips on books are also welcome!

Thanks in advance! Smile

Ken Burns "The War" Is a great WWII Documentary told from the American perspective. Best WWII documentary I've ever seen, as most don't hold my interest but his storytelling kept me hooked.

Might not be the best choice for you though, as it does dive pretty deep into smaller subjects, like focusing on individual American towns and giving you an in depth perspective of how it affected them, still worth checking out though.

Vietnam history is covered pretty well by PBS: Vietnam a Television History. It's an 11 part series I think. It is quite critical but skims over the bombing of South Vietnam in a tiny part of only one episode. Sticks to main stream framework for analysis like concentrating on North Bombing, problems with the regieme in the South.

General conflicts of 20th century, 'War of the World' by Nial Fergussion is good, 7 parts I think. Although he is a highly biased historian.

Science is best covered by BBC docs IMHO. Really good doc on particle physics and quantum mechanics is "Atom" 3 part documentary by Jim Al-Khali (sp?). Also PBS's "The Elegant Universe" is good but quite bias and not critical on superstring theory. Biology (well evoultion) there's Richard Dawkins xmas lectures, I think it's a 3 parts. There's also his Horizon ep in 1985, 'The Blind Watchmaker' that's good.

I'll post some more if I think of any.

If you have an interest in American history told from a different point of view, I'd suggest:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_People's_History_of_the_United_States

Quote:
According to this classic of revisionist American history, narratives of national unity and progress are a smoke screen disguising the ceaseless conflict between elites and the masses whom they oppress and exploit. Historian Zinn sides with the latter group in chronicling Indians' struggle against Europeans, blacks' struggle against racism, women's struggle against patriarchy, and workers' struggle against capitalists. First published in 1980, the volume sums up decades of post-war scholarship into a definitive statement of leftist, multicultural, anti-imperialist historiography. This edition updates that project with new chapters on the Clinton and Bush presidencies, which deplore Clinton's pro-business agenda, celebrate the 1999 Seattle anti-globalization protests and apologize for previous editions' slighting of the struggles of Latinos and gays. Zinn's work is an vital corrective to triumphalist accounts, but his uncompromising radicalism shades, at times, into cynicism. Zinn views the Bill of Rights, universal suffrage, affirmative action and collective bargaining not as fundamental (albeit imperfect) extensions of freedom, but as tactical concessions by monied elites to defuse and contain more revolutionary impulses; voting, in fact, is but the most insidious of the "controls." It's too bad that Zinn dismisses two centuries of talk about "patriotism, democracy, national interest" as mere "slogans" and "pretense," because the history he recounts is in large part the effort of downtrodden people to claim these ideals for their own.

nouseforaname, I posted up Matt Damon reading People's History to usenet, has a really good into by Zinn. Love the way he writes.

And oh didn't know you also wanted books.

US History - Zinn's book above.

US Imperialism - Chomsky Reader or Hegemony or Survival, Chomsky. Actually any Chomsky period. Plenty of free books online.

Vietnam - Larry Berman is a good historian. But rather than reading history books on this by far the best source is 'The Pentagon Papers', an internal State Department history. It's actually honest. It's way too long but if you google around you get relevant extracts online.

Israel/Palestiane - Image and Reality, Norman Finklestein (intro is a really good summary)

For Science:

Quantum - A Guide for the Perplexed by Jim Alkali (sp). Beautifully printed book too, thick set paper, high quality colour laser, graphics heavy and makes a complicated subject make sense.

The Elegant Universe - Brian Greene. Based on the PBS doc of the same name.
