aww shit
in any case, the novels don't really sound that much alike ..
Quote: | A cult novel in France, this sci-fi thriller is now being made into a movie by Mathieu Kassovitz. Set in the hidden "flesh and chip" breeding grounds of the first cyborg communities and peopled by Serbian Mafiosi, Babylon Babies has as its hero a hard-boiled leatherneck veteran of Sarajevo named Thoorop who is hired by a mysterious source to escort a young woman named Marie Zorn from Russia to Canada. A garden variety job, he figures. But when Thoorop is offered an even higher fee by another organization, he realizes Marie is no ordinary girl. A schizophrenic and the possible carrier of a new artificial virus, Marie is carrying a mutant embryo created by an American cult that dreams of producing a genetically modified messiah, a dream that spells out the end of human life as we know it.
Inspired by Philip K. Dick, William S. Burroughs, Gilles Deleuze, and other extrapolationists of the future, Babylon Babies unfolds at breakneck speed as Thoorop risks his life to save Marie, whose brain -- linking to the neuromatrix -- loses all limits and becomes the universe itself. Exploring the symbiosis between organic matter and computer power to spin new forms of consciousness, Maurice Dantec rides Nietzsche's prophecy: "Man is something to be overcome." |

it is curious that those sons of bitches changed it from Canada to China for the movie
EDIT: nvm, seems IMDb fucked up, he will end up in new york according to
Quote: | The adventure goes "across war-torn Eastern Europe to a slightly surreal New York 20 years in the future... in a close future dominated by mafias, media and technology" |

Quote: | 'Babylon' Director Badmouths Film
Is there a French translation for the phrase, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you?"
Director Mathieu Kassovitz -- best known in this country for his acting turns in movies like Amelie and Munich -- is an award-winning filmmaker in his native France. He spent the last five years working on his dream project, an adaptation of the French sci-fi novel "Babylon Babies," got a Hollywood studio to co-finance it, and scored a big American movie star to headline it. So now that the movie is coming out, why is he so angry?
In an uncommonly open interview with SciFi Scanner, Kassovitz said, "I'm very unhappy with the film...I never had a chance to do one scene the way it was written or the way I wanted it to be. The script wasn't respected. Bad producers, bad partners, it was a terrible experience."
The movie tells the story of Toorop (Vin Diesel), a mercenary charged with protecting a genetically altered young woman from Eastern Europe to New York. Kassovitz said he was interested in what the original book stated about the changing nature of global politics and redrawing of national borders. But he now feels the movie doesn't communicate any of those themes.
*
"It's pure violence and stupidity," he admits. "The movie is supposed to teach us that the education of our children will mean the future of our planet. All the action scenes had a goal: They were supposed to be driven by either a metaphysical point of view or experience for the characters... instead parts of the movie are like a bad episode of 24." >> Read the full interview.
The production was plagued by delays, weather problems, and budgetary concerns. But Kassovitz is now most upset that the studio, 20th Century Fox, edited down his original cut to a short 93 minutes. Vin Diesel jokingly asked if he was still in the movie after all the edits. The director said that he's happy with some of the scenes in the final product, but mostly he feels regret. "I had something much better in my hands but I just wasn't allowed to work...I should have chosen a studio that has guts." |
Welcome to the wonderful world of Hollywood , Mathieu Kassovitz .

Well, what the hell, pussies, make a stand and disallow the release of the movie (or threaten Fox to dis it at every chance, which is basically the same). But, yeah, everyone are such pussy wussies, afraid for their necks...
20th Century Fox... Why does anyone even want to do films with them anyway.

No, that's the problem. The action was dull, at best. If it was at least entertaining with big explosions, I would've enjoyed it.
The whole thing was a pretentious attempt at social commentary and angst with religion. Pass if you can.
