I'm thinking about installing vista 64 on my pc.

Does anyone know if I'll have many compatibility problems?
I'm gonna use it mainly as a gaming pc.

I have a Quad core 6600, 4gb ram, geforce 8800gt.

thanks

It is pretty usable except for the few apps which will use unsigned drivers (peerguardian, etc). On the memory side, rather stay 32-bit if you only have 4GB of ram and don't plan to go over, in 64-bit the same data occupies more space in memory, thus if you just go 64-bit basically to see 4GB instead of 3.5GB in system properties then just pass your way. 4gb is enough for me right? I don't think Ill be needing more ram anytime soon.

Is 64 faster than the 32 ?

Couple of things to note about a freshly installed Vista. With a clean install, it thrashes due to superfetch's learning algorithm, the indexing service, the scheduled defragger and windows defender amongst other things.

If you can't install a slipstreamed SP1 Vista, then grab a copy of the 64-bit upgrade SP1 executable, make it the first thing you install on your shiny new clean OS.

I'd recommend you disable Windows defender, disable the crappy defragger (use 64-bit O&O or equivalent), enable Vista's built in firewall (set it to block everthing in/out without a rule and start creating rules manually).

Microsoft recommends a couple of hours for the learning profile to complete, but I'd say it takes a couple of days for your HDD to become nice and quiet again.

As memory is so cheap and with Vista noticably loving RAM, especially 64-bit, you should go for 8GB. Also with Windows 7 on the horizon, it wouldn't hurt Smile

true.

I've already gotten Sp1 for vista 64, vista without it ( for 32 or 64) sucks big time.
That's why my hdd is keeps on working all the time. I didn't know about this learning profile..
Can this bit defender slow my network at home? Wifi there has been pretty slow these days.

Just intalled vista this weekend.

It works great. Way faster than the 32 one.
And the 32bit programs haven't been crashing due to vista64.

Thanks all for the help

i have same setup but a diff graphix card, yours is ideal for the 64 bit setuop because you have a DX10 card and vista is a DX10 program. cista requires 1gb ram usage at all times FYI, you would run great with the 64 bit, you should have a windows score of a 5.5 somewhere in that range. DO IT

As far as I remember I've used this one. It doesn't require activation and it comes with sp1 installed.
