I got this hdd a few weeks back and i recently noticed after i installed silent fans that it vibrates. Quite loud, too. And the strangest thing is it's not a permanent sound but has a "rythm" to it so to speak. Lasts for about a second then it goes normal for another second then it goes loud again. You can actually feel this when you touch the case. Extremely annoying. If it was loud all the time i could get used to it but the coming and going drives me nuts!
Now my question: Is this how it's supposed to be or should i worry about this hdd dying early? Anybody else have this?

I bought a My Book from WD 2 weeks ago. Ok its an external and it has rubber sleeves around it. As my Comp table is made out of frosted glass (looks pretty nice actually) the sound from the drive gets enhanced through the glass surface and hums a bit loud. I will probably put it away under the table when I find a good solution (shelf or something) but it looks so dam nice as the light is blue on it, same as my G15 and my G9 and my 24" Samsung. Looks pretty cool with all that gear with glowing blue light  .
You could try to buy some rubber grommets or something. There is good anti vibration accessories for HD's etc, and its pretty cheap stuff.

Yea if its that loud could be a faulty bearing or something. If you can return it, just do it. personally i get really Peed off when HW fails like that 
And yea, a HD that dies is a big P in the ARSCH!

I would say its a misaligned spindle. Or a loose one.

certainly sounds like it, the noise is not affected by seeking or read/write operations

I have 2 x Seagate ST3320620AS 320GB and 2 x Maxtor STM3320620AS 320GB and have no complaints with performance, noise, vibration or temperatures with any of my drives.
I remember vaguely hearing/reading about problems with earlier models of the 7200.10 with firmwares before 3.AAD, from Singapore, China or somewhere, but don't quote me on that.
I'd say to return it as well.
