After RPGWatch:

Gaslamp Games (Dungeons of Dredmor) points out the Alpha release of Starfarer, an indie "single-player sandbox style space role-playing game with strategic elements" from Fractal Softworks. Preordering gets you access to the Alpha (currently v0.33) and a 50% discount, making the price $10. They plan to use a Mount & Blade style increasing price as the development gets closer to release. Apparently Gaslamp provided the art (no big eyebrows this time), so it looks quite nice for an indie. The feature list:
- Single player, gritty, dystopian sci-fi setting
- Classic top down gameplay style enhanced by modern technology
- Unique character development system – advance your story, your way
- Assemble a large, powerful fleet or a finely-tuned task force with hand-picked officers and crew
- Outfit hulls with your weapons of choice, and add ship systems to create crushing tactical combinations
- Explore hundreds of star systems to find habitable worlds, rich resource deposits, and advanced alien technology
- Impact the inter-stellar economy with your decisions – decide the fate of entire planetary systems
- Fight to bring stability and prosperity to the sector – or watch it burn while you take advantage of the chaos
- Runs on Linux, Mac, and Windows

~edit~

Eww.... Starfarer is made in Java. That sours the deal a little Neutral You have to have a serial code to activate the alpha, so I *might* check it out when I get paid.. but being made in Java is definitely not appealing.

Looks brilliant, shame I don't have time to really get into it now. Do post some more opinions tho, always a nice read. Smile

Oh and,

What does “classic” mean?

We are glad you asked. Let’s use a food analogy: Take a slice of Star Control, mix it with cubed Master of Orion 2, add in a dash of MechWarrior and stir it all up in our special development pot. As indie developers and old school gamers we are going back to the Golden Age of Gaming with our design choices and presentation. Of course, if you load up one of those games now you may be cringing at the graphics. That’s where our modern game engine and art department come in. In addition, sound effects and music really set the stage for a memorable experience.

I grabbed it, it looks pretty interesting and I'm looking for some "laptop friendly" games which don't totally suck.. indie is always the way to go in this respect!

Btw, can you pre-order SPaZ yet?

Not yet matey. The team have already sent the game off to Impulse to have their protection installed (simply Goo system, according to them, nothing more than a serial check) as well as getting BT Micro installed on their site. They're hoping for a release sometime this week.

http://www.spacepiratesandzombies.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1975#p1975

That's the latest update. Impulse didn't send out the Goo'd executable in time for the weekend, so they should receive it Monday sometime - and then a few days to quickly test it.

I've been following this for a while and it's very, very interesting. Hope it turns out as good as it sounds.

Now, if only Northstar wasn't vaporware... Sad

from what I understand it will be, but the alpha version that you get access to if you preorder is just some predefined missions so far?

I didnt try it though so someone who preordered this might be able to say for sure.

There are some decent games made with java. For small indie games like this it's great because it lets the dev get their game to multiple platforms with minimal effort.

Sorry guys, we’re having a bit of a problem with the order form (says that your order is empty when you submit). Working with BMT Micro to get this resolved ASAP.

Update: Looks like the issue is taking a while to resolve. However, it’s not all bad news! If you send me an email in the meantime, (Contact Us link on the right), I will send you a discount code good for 30% off the price to make up for this debacle.

Please put “Debacle” in the subject line to make sure I don’t miss it.

Thanks for your patience and support!
