Not genre, not story etc but the setting and style of the game. World War II, Future, Medieval.

Me personally is any setting with an Art Deco theme. A lot of people dunno what that art style is so....Bioshock, Crimson Skies, Timeshift etc. Theres something about that what the future would look like in in the old days that really captures my interest.

I love fantasy settings, preferably ancient, but futuristic is good too. Things like LoTR, Warhammer, Warhammer 40k, Warcraft are just fantastic for me.

Dark grisly modern city streets, kind a like Vampires The Masquerade, King Pin, Max Payne.
Also the 1920s horror settings seen in the lovecraft works, especially seen in Dark Corners of The Earth, running through Innsmouth sneaking to club some fishermen. So awesome.

Settings that are used in some of the adventure games are simply breathtaking. Grim Fandango, Syberia, The Longest Journey. They really make me wish I lived there.

Which longest journey? I played dreamfall and that was one of the best atmospheres EVER.

What setting would you call Bladerunners? The hardcore futuristic japanese market taking over etc theme. It's a very rare one but a fantastic one. Makes me want to play blade runner again

Haha blade runner was nice, but sooo short, i remember passing the game in less than 4 hours and i think i'm being generous.

And i think the best setting are futuristic apocalyptic style like FFVII and fallout and horror(resident evil and then some)

I love the 1950s and any arthurian setting.. but there aren't any good king arthur games. I prefer medieval without magic.

The post-apocalyptic setting is by far my favorite one. The Fallout series handled it the best way in my opinion.
Maybe this thread will have more point if you'll make it a poll?

Abandoned desolation. Like Halflife2. Empty streets. Unkempt dilapidated buildings.

favourite is probably futuristic dystopian (HL2)... my favourite under-used setting is Vietnam, seems like almost every single game in that era is shitty as hell Sad

Bioshock is not dystopic at all. It is art deco, steampunk at most.

a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding.

It actually is metophorically both a dystopia and utopia. I could relate Bioshock to almost all of those traits (minus overcrowding, though we can't know for sure, Only what Ryan has revealed to us?!)

I gotta go with "dark dystopian" future, aka Deus Ex.
Medieval comes a close second, with all out fantasy right next to it.

We need more dark dystopia games - Hellgate London completely missed the mark. Simply too dark and just plain dull. Need something with like a cross of Blade Runner and Equilibrium.

Was the Bladerunner game any good? I missed that somehow.

I don’t hate any specific setting, but I hate cliché stories with moronic unthinking heroes that shit flowers and have their countries flags up their asses.
