Here's a question for all the geeks out here. I'm repairing this girl's laptop. Something in Windows died, don't know what, it won't boot, whatever. Backed up the contents of her HDD to an external, reformatted, put Vista instead of XP on it, now this girl tells me she has no records of any of her passwords/whatever, and that she's kind of lost without.
Basically I need a way to recover autocomplete data from Internet Explorer 5, and preferably implant it into whatever IE it is that Vista comes with. Is that possible, given that I only have the files on her HDD (not the metadata, the actual files, the drive in question wasn't ghosted, just ctrl+c, ctrl+v.) Really appreciate your help on this one.

I tried it... the only solutions I could find involved being logged on as that user, and the install is very broken, so not possible. I'd love some advice on recovering this stuff another way (i.e. copying some file or something)

A way could be to install xp, somewhat overwrite the fresh setup registry files with the recovered ones and if it boot to use these "password recovery" apps.
Maybe have a look at this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

You could, as you suggest, find the file which holds these passwords on the old drive and copy that file into a new installation of IE and see if it remembers the passwords. Or you could try the password recovery progs. The passwords are stored in the registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IntelliForms\SPW
