|
 |
Hey guys, rather than trawling Mac *shudder* sites for hours, desperately trying to find a conclusive answer, I figured I'd ask somewhere I trust =) I've been struggling with this god forsaken "Other" category on my iTouch for a while now and it finally reached a point where I just can't ignore it any longer. The fucking thing is at 1GB used (on an 8GB iTouch with 6.83GB total usable space) and that's just completely unacceptable. Does anyone know a way of clearing that shit out? I looked online and a lot of people recommend doing a restore then resyncing all my music/apps. I really DON'T want to do that;
1. I'll lose the Jailbreak. It's easy enough to JB again, but still annoying.
2. I'll lose all my saves for my games. That's a lot of saves, including some pretty long ones.
3. The iTunes RESTORE function tries to automatically update to latest iOS. NOT fun.
So does anyone know a way of clearing out "Other", or at least shrinking it back to the 350-400MB it used to be? Thanks guys, I really appreciate any help you can give.
-edit-
One last thing; if I "de-sync" the games on my pod by unchecking them in iTunes, does that also remove save games?
-edit-
Guess I answered my own question. Unticking an app in iTunes specifically states it, and all its data, will be removed. Jesus H Fucking Christ, Apple! Who taught you fucking monkeys to code?? Useless bastards. Fine, fuck it, see if I care.
*desyncs, blanks, restores, re-jailbreaks iPod*
FUCK YOU.

I have no clue how this could be done, but I have a question. Why is it bad to let iTunes update the OS?

Because the latest is 4.1 and that can't be jailbroken on the iTouch 2G MC .. at least not untethered.

What annoys me the most is how Apple have ballsed up the storage count. 8GB should *actually* be 7.4GB, but noooo... not according to Almighty Apple©, who gives you 6.8GB out of 8GB to use. Bravo.
Hmm, actually just found out the iPod has two partitions on its drive. A 512MB one dedicated for iOS files and 6.8GB for pure data.
... and recovery mode doesn't work. Yippee! I get the "3194" error. *sigh* Apple REALLY don't like their slaves staying on older firmware. They only sign/approve restores and updates to the VERY LATEST firmware, so if you try to restore to an older one - they deny it and the update fails. God, that entire COMPANY fails.
*redirect to Cydia. Recovery mode. Restore firmware. Win*
Fuck you Crapple.
-edit-
Fresh restore, the only apps/data installed AT ALL is Cydia/Installous/Springboard - and of those only Installous is on the data partition - and already there's 350MB gone on "other" I hate this company.

Do you know anything about JB progress with the new OS Sabin? Is there a site or a forum which keeps track? If it'll take a shitload of time, I'd rather not buy the 4G.

One more reason why I'll never buy an Apple product. "A Mac always works" my ass, and you don't get to force your crapTunes on me, or block apps that improve your crappy shit out of my app store
(true story btw, they blocked a guy's camera app for the 3G which was tons better than Apple's own crap..somehow some of the stuff he had in his app have made their way into the newer iPhones :B)

A used Ipod Touch 3G was my first apple product ever, I understand why it has so many fans. While everything around it is shit (Apple, iTunes, restrictions etc.), no media player imo can compare to a jailbroken Ipod Touch. It's a perfect gadget for a nerd, since we can just jailbreak the shit out of it and use alternative apps.

Now that I think of it. Is the 8GB still inferior to the 32 and 64 versions HW wise? The third gen 8GB Touch had second gen hardware.
What's "unthethered jailbreak"?

I googled, apparently they're all the same now. I thought putting second gen hardware in the Ipod 8GB 3G, and especially not mentioning it clearly to the consumer, was a very shitty move by Apple. The fourth generation only differs in the memory now, like it should.

Yeah, all 4th devices (even the 8GB one) has the advanced hardware.. it was just the 3rd Gen that got shat on unless you bought the 32/64GB models.

Sorry for the possibly simple and/or stupid questions. How safe is this jailbreak thing really? Can it brick my Ipod? What does "limera1n is unpatchable" mean? What's there to patch?

If you have just an ipod what point would there be to jailbreak it if all it does is play music?

We are on nforce therefore the reason is piracy, what else?

IF (very big IF) something goes wrong during the jailbreak you might need to restore your iPod. It will not be able to boot the OS but there is a recovery mode which ignores the defect OS and accepts a restore from iTunes. Conclusion: you can't really brick it.
"unpatchable" means that Apple can't fix the exploit with an update, that attack takes place below the level of the OS. The exploit can be reused for any iOS revision on current devices in the future but Apple will of course fix it in the next generation of iPhone/iPod.
In case of limera1n, the core exploit is unpatchable, but the untethered part isn't.
Tethered means that you need to connect to a PC and rerun the jailbreak tool every time you reboot your iPod (only for real reboot, sleep mode is unaffected). iOS 4.2 will definitely word tethered with limera1n, the untethered part needs to be rewritten and may not be possible at all (but unlikely).

ya but you said ipod, when I hear ipod I think the mp3 player. Or was there some ipod that came out that plays games and movies too? Or are you referring to the itouch? Forgive me for my ignorance but I don't follow apple products the slightest bit other than the itouch that I was given

Ah my bad, I refer to the Touch when I say Ipod (since it's my first Ipod).
Thanks me7 and Sabin for the answers.

You could also JB the earlier iPods, the non-Touch ones, as they had apps also.

No probs =)

Not conclusively, no. The overwhelming opinion (from the SMART people, not the dumb-fuck Macfags who know precisely DICK about computing) is that it's orphan and garbage data which accumulates from dodgy apps not completely removing remnant files upon installation, or even during installation, as well as removing the iDevice without specifically hitting "eject" in iTunes. "Other" is basically files uncategorised and unknown to the iOS.
The dumbfucks, on the other hand, claim it's essential OS files. Completely forgetting that the iDevice (all of them!) has a dedicated partition for iOS.
Sadly there's just no way of clearing that Other data unless you restore/format. GG Apple.

This is why i love android so much, your not generally locked out of anything and you have enough control wirhout root access to maintain your device as needed. Shit these as jailbroken still doesnt feel like im in charge of it

I've seen Other grow after installing many freshly downloaded games on my Ipad but later it would always return back to minimum.
Also everything you put in internal storage (movies for Oplay, comic books, PDF files) is also shown as Other.
