The introduction to the upcoming psychological thriller Asemblance (yes, it really is spelled with one “s”, no, we don't know why) is straightforward, and yet also very much not: “You wake to find yourself trapped inside an experimental machine. A machine built to simulate memories. You have no idea how you got here... But to break the cycle, you must look into a past that you may not want to remember.”

Asemblance is inspired by The Twilight Zone, The X-Files, and the Black Mirror television shows, as well as games like PT and The Stanley Parable, that “allow players to explore different theories and ultimately engage one another to learn the truth,” Nilo Studios Creative Director Niles Sankey said on the PlayStation Blog. “We were inspired by this approach to create a narrative where you’re never quite sure what’s real or what’s not.”

Nilo is a relatively new studio, but Sankey said its developers have “years of experience making games, writing books, and producing music” in the Seattle area. Sankey himself was at Bungie for almost ten years, where he worked on both Halo and Destiny, before founding Nilo.

Asemblance is set to come out some time in May, which is just a week away, and despite the announcement only referring to the PS4 release, Nilo confirmed on Twitter that it's coming to Steam as well. Find out more at asemblance.com.

Well, if you take a better look at the logo, the title is more A-Semblance, referring to "a lack of resemblence".

The game could be anything from good to abysmal, the trailer doesn't show much at all.

The trailer shows everything the game has to offer. Walking, reading and listening. What more do you need?

Looks interesting but kind of empty. Will wait for reviews.

TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"

PCGamer are idiots. Since the game looks to be in a simulation, I would imagine that the title could be referring to something like "A semblance to reality." "Translated" it'd be something like "loosely related to reality." Semblance is basically a lesser degree of resemblance. Sometimes they're used interchangeably but it's not common. Apparently it can also mean ghost or apparition but I've never heard it used as such.

Asemblance is the latest game to rely on the community to find solutions to its secrets. A first-person mystery set inside a Holodeck-like memory lab, you must enter a number of 'memory events' in order to piece together what is going on. Why are you there? What are the memories trying to tell you?

I've played through each memory numerous times now, with triggered events causing changes in how the memories are displayed. I've managed to find a handful of 'endings', although none have been particularly satisfying. On seeing an ending you're asked if you want to continue or start again. Obviously I've continued each time (is that a mistake? I don't know), but I'm now at the point where I'm completely stuck. I think there's one more ending to find.

At the moment Asemblance is an interesting diversion, but it promises to be much more. Whether it fulfils that promise will depend on what mysteries can be solved (which might well involve looking outside of the game). And I'm torn on the merits of a game seemingly designed so a single player (at least one with my intelligence) can't find the ultimate conclusion. It worked well for P.T., a demo available to everyone for free, but Asemblance is a game you have to hand over money for.

How Asemblance, which is being touted as "the first episode of an expansive franchise inspired by The Twilight Zone, The X-Files and the Black Mirror television series," sets up later episodes will be interesting. For now this stands alone as something a bit different from the norm. It's brief but discovering everything will take considerable time and effort.

TL;DR
(Sounds a bit like The Stanley Parable)

+ Nice graphics
+ Replay memories to find new secrets
+ Atmospheric

- Rather short
- Confusing at times
