SimCity™ Societies
Quote: |
SimCity Societies allows players to create a variety of cities with the unique societies they desire. Players can choose from a variety of more than 350 building types, each of which allows them to combine, connect and re-arrange structures freely. Players can also challenge authority and experiment with what happens when citizens flagrantly disobey power in an unruly Orwellian society. Or if players are feeling happy, they can build a Fun City filled with Ferris Wheels, Gingerbread Houses and Chocolate Factories!

But they seem wishing to kill the city builder franchise with their à la "The sims" weird additions:
Quote: | SimCity Societies introduces an all-new, revolutionary feature set for players to combine buildings that will produce or consume new kinds of resources called “social energies.” How you mix and match these resources – industry, wealth, obedience, knowledge, devotion, or creativity—determines the social energy of your city. Will your city be happy and creative, spiritual and knowledgeable, will it be wealthy and powerful or obedient and fearful? Its fate is in your hands! |

This one isn't by Maxis though I think, so don't expect that Will Wrighty magic all over it.
Kind of sounds like they tried to go a new way with SimsVille, the game that was cancelled 5 years ago (and God I was dissapointed about it back then!)

Oh yes, this is the fuck-up of the series as we know it. The moment I read Maxis was not developing it, I knew what to expect.
This one's definitely a pass. Tycoon City and City Life were totally not to my interest, I don't see a reason why this one will be.

Let's be fair, Tilted Mill does have some amazing experience with city building games (former Impressions folk). It's just that they're usually more for the sociologists rather than the urban planners/economists among us. I'm sure it'll be above average across the board. They just have to make sure to retain the SimCity feel.

I didn't mean to be mean against Tilted Mill. It's just that I've loved SimCity for its current mechanism, and if anything I'd love the fifth installment to be building up on that, provide the ultimate city simulator. I want to be the Mayor, the City Planner, watch people come to my city and flourish it with their houses.
From what I've read on the previews, I just don't like the approach Societies takes on it. On the other hand, I really hope to be blatantly wrong about the quality of the game once it comes out. I really hope I'll be able to enjoy it nevertheless.

You guys seen the video? Corrupt police station, Conditioning theater, Ministry of thought.. I think I'll enjoy playing this more than I've enjoyed recent city builders.

It's great and all, but only if it allows some user interaction, like, say, Tropico to go along with it. (Arresting people/political enemies you dislike, things like that) Otherwise, they're just buildings with a different texture.
Besides, corrupt police station? You mean like there's any other kind of police station?
Oh yeah, I went there.

I'll say I'm on the fence for this one. Looks like it could really be great with the changes. Lets face it, the basic simcity formula was getting old, so they had to do something fresh with it. But like others have mentioned, if they dumb it down like seems the trend in city-building strategy games of late, it'll just be another pretty game with no interaction. If they somehow keep the complexities of the old games with the dynamic and organic living city they describe, it might be pretty good.

Just after they started releasing information about this game, the whole SimCity community started shouting, and the more information that gets released the more negative reaction is to be seen. Everything we know so far is in the opposite direction of what SimCity fans wants to see
SimCity fans wants more realism, what do we get? Buildings made of candy! SimCity fans like the complexity, what do we get? Something that probably isn't even challenging for a 5 year old! SimCity fans like zoning and dislikes plopping down buildings, what do we get? No more zoning!
This game sounds like a cheap rip-off of City Life, which was a failure
I'm still having a hard time accepting that the sequel to City Life might be the only city building game that might be able to save the genre until we see a real SimCity 5
Why did EA order Tilted Mill to make it? They have only managed to make average games
Give us Simsville instead, that looked like it could be a fun game. I'm more interested in playing the beta of Simsville that was canceled 6½ years ago, than I am interested in playing this game

Well, it looks nice, but the performance in the dev interview videos was so bad, I'm actually worried.

looks like utter shit.
What a pretentious piece of garbage of a trailer.
They want to tout endless imaginative possibilities..well when you're taking out the core of the gameplaying and adding fucking mickey mouse saturday morning cartoon shit, it doesn't fly.
