After i am record some thing
i run it through Virtual dub
to encode it better and to a smaller file
but
the video becomes squared (kinda like the mosaic filter in photoshop)
and i saw that all the guys that encode all the tv shows also use Xvid
but there video is perfect
so does any body know what program/settings the use?

Ditch Xvid for x264. Much better quality for much less space.

For easy encoding, get StaxRip. Best one-click encoding tool.

avg xvid is .7gig average x264 720 is 4gig it may be a better quality to space ratio but its certainly not better compression overall otherwise xvid would be totally dead already. Unless you mean x264 in a non HD state?

Thanks for the staxrip link though. might have a play with that for x264

Rolling Eyes Avg .7gig Xvid res is 640 while 4gig x264 is 1280. Rolling Eyes FYI, you can put a 640x270 in .35gig (and even less) at the same quality of Xvid.

I like you, so I won't mention my yellow sig. (not the one I have now, the one Saint didn't like). Razz

The only reason why XviD isn't dead yet is its compatibility with stand-alone DVD players. If you encode a video for PC-only use go with x264.

Yes. Sadly, hardware manufacturers won't be making any standalone hardware that supports MKV/x264, unless some sort of mini-bd is found, where you take the MKV, take its video and audio tracks and mux them into bd files, which are readable by standalone bd players.
