I was looking for an F1 sim myself and settled on rFactor mods such as 'CTDP' and 'FSONE'. I'm currently playing the latter in an online racing league and it's great fun. Check here for a racing league which runs off of the rFactor engine, it's very casual and have their own server (and yours truly is a member ): Fun Gaming League
If you want to see the mods in action goto youtube and search 'rFactor CTDP' and/or 'rFactor FSONE'.
GP4 and the like will obviously do some things better, and certainly as a package it feels more F1 as a whole - but if you like online gaming then I think you can't go wrong with these modifications for a robust, scalable game like rFactor
Singleplayer is pants in my opinion however. You can do seasons, races and so forth but the AI takes a huge chunk out of your CPU so it's real jerky with the full track.

GP4, definitely. It has a heckload of mods for it out there. Graphics Improvement, TV presentation, season packages, tracks, everything is out there modded.
My favorite one however remains F1 Racing Championship. I'll never forget the fun I had with my wheel in that game.

Assuming I'm reading you right; it's not based on GP4. Track/Model conversions come from all sorts of games and unless I'm mistaken CTDP make most of their stuff from scratch. It wouldn't surprise me though if they utilised their work on several different engines (such as GP4, F1 Challenge and rFactor) obviously.

I think the graphics are still some of the best overall, like a good painting - especially in the rain (One of the only games I can think of that has visible puddles that are simulated afaik). The problem, for me anyway, is that the controls feel very awkward and unnatural even using a wheel. In rFactor it's very fluid and 'feels' more realistic. Then of course I've never played GP4 online either - and don't personally know anyone who still does. That was an important aspect of choosing rFactor as it has a large (growing) and active online community and the developers are still making patches/addons.
Still, if you want singleplayer you have to go with GP4 no question. Hot lapping just isn't much fun unless you're doing against human opponents.

I've read a topic which says it is, but that there might be 'fade' type bugs installed where your engine will blowup on the last lap. Of course that might be bullshit and just the drivers fault - but apparently not. Still, I don't know as I bought it online, was cheap enough.

Really? It looked pretty average, usual official Sony fare from what I saw (comparison screenshots show the PC rFactor mods to be of higher quality as well). Get GP4 and rFactor mods for online.
