I don't see how you could have invested in china since foreign investors cannot invest directly in china. Only a few institutional investors (subject to certain conditions) have access to the market. In any case even if you did invest via those funds, the chinese stock market just hit a record high so it's highly unlikely you lost money on the chinese market. Unless your fund manager is an idiot.

This is not 20/20 hindsight. This is my reasoning.

Nevermind the fact that TomTom is facing tough competition from cheaper brands and their margins are under pressure.

Nevermind that more and more mobile phones are coming out with integrated GPS which makes their product redundant.

The one major factor supporting the price of this stock is emotion. It is the so-called darling of the market so people tend to overlook the obvious. Yet these stocks are known to be volatile and they experience large fluctuations without any obvious reason. So you still might make money depending on the term of the option. I am assuming you bought a European option which does make it a bit riskier.

Thanks but I used to play these kinds of investment games a long time ago. It's good training for people wanting to invest but I would rather invest that time in a real portfolio.

What are you doing with Laurus man? Very Happy That's a long term stock and I assume this game is short term. You should have more volatile short-term stuff like ABN, ASML, etc. And do you have to invest in those shitty investment funds as a rule? Razz My advice is make two portfolios; one a serious one which you would invest in with real money and a second one which is like crazy filled with high risk crap. Sell the whole index short. Very Happy

If you are really into stock may I suggest the following.

Intelligent Investor - Benjamin Graeme
Security Analysis - Benjamin Graeme

These books are the foundation of investing. Benjamin Graeme is the guy who taught Buffet. Remember only buy stocks if you have the intestinal fortitude to see your stocks fall by 50% and still hold on. Always buy stocks assuming that you will never be able to sell them in the future. Therefore you see stocks as a percentage share of a business. This forces you to look at value rather than the price.

'intestinal fortitude' good one

Seriously though, I certainly can't argue with the likes of Warren Buffet but I can't see the logic in holding on to a stock after it's fallen by 50%. That kind of emotional investing leads to gambler's syndrome. I mean there's definitely a reason why the stock has fallen. Why should it rise now unless you know something the market doesn't.

As far as value is concerned, you might own a stock that performs beautifully financially but is undervalued on the market. How do get the hidden value out of that stock. You can't influence market sentiment.

Reed elsevier? lol

Just take some mining companies, i made shitloads on ALCOA (although i lost 15% on the china drop some time ago). Got them at $34.74, went to 30.00 and sold them at $40

Get in on ALCAN atm. Take over under way

and a lot on google. So volatile, you can double your money with options on 1 day.

Get some long calls on DNDN (dendreon)
long calls on MSFT (microsoft)
and some middle-long puts in yahoo (jun 2008)

That should do good.

But in the near future. Metals the way to go.

And the dollar is shit low now, so should get a rebound (at least i hope). Maybe you can cover via some currency futures Wink

my 2 cents

and dont buy call/puts of euro companies on euronext. They get suspended when they move 20% a day. Where is the fun in that Wink

-> and thats real money Wink

no, real bling bling.

I play in some competitions now and then. (KBC competition/tijd.be competition)

Thats how i started playing in real. And with real money, it is much more addicting. You cannot say "fuck it, stupid game, i quit" Wink

And I have a free account on www.optionsxpress.com. I use it to "test new strategies". hehe.
But you can play there as well. No game though. Only fictious money and have some fun Wink

I know, I know all is forgiven Smile Its just that I live in a rich area and people are quick to think of me as a snob, while really my parents encourage me to work me ass off for anything I want. They realize that they can easily spoil me, but since one of them grew up on a farm with no electricity, and the other was the brat of a Navy officer and a broke radio operator, they want me to learn how to work my way through life, and hope that I do the same with my kids. So it really bites deep when someone calls me spoiled Sad

Very Happy

Be careful though because that stock is verrrry volatile and can easily go 4% the other way without any reason behind it. The good thing is that if you can time it well then you can make money on the positive as well as the negative swings. Goldman just put TomTom on their buy list.
