ELIZ your wrong i had the same problem on a bulid-in and a external sound card ( Realtek HD Sound Card and SB LIVE)
The only answer from the tech forum was to reinstall WMP 11 and OpeanAL .
So i did that and still nothing - atlest the sound was on but no music .
Then they told me that those two sound cards are ok and my problem is a driver one and i should set WMP11 to default because this game uses WMP 11 for the MP3 music and OpeanAL for the sounds .
So i did that and finally this game had music and sound ...

i have sb live24! and no problems with sound, using original drivers and don't have openal installed, only wmp11
|

Well i think im using the old driver so maybe if i get the new one its going to work.

lol, yeah just buy another hardware every time an error occurs.  |
i believe realtek makes only on-board sound cards 
i had zillion problems with on-board audio while playing games
watching movies or listening to the music on-board will do the job |

Hell you can go to wal*mart (I hate the store..let it be known) and get a sound blaster live 5.1 24bit sound card for like $20 USD |

Just fixed this problem by loading dxdiag (start menu > run > (type) dxdiag) and decreasing "sound hardware acceleration" by 3 notches.
sound in both channels now...a temporary fix i guess.
