Code: | This week, though, came word that the Deus Ex series is being revived. In an video interview with MusiquePlus, Eidos France director general Patrick Melichor revealed that a new game in the series was in the works at the British publisher's recently formed Montreal, Canada, studio. "The first mission for the team will be to bring back to life an extraordinary title called Deus Ex," said the well-groomed Melichor. The executive also revealed that some 40 developers would be committed to the project. |
Lets hope it wont be as crappy as the second one was...

Unless Warren Spector and Harvey Smith is on the team, I am calling this the biggest fluke of the century. Even worse than the sequel.

As long as they develop the game in parallel with a console release, it will suck. Consoles are too limited for this type of game and the results are obvious. Theif3 and DeusEx2 both suffered from console development.
Once the consoles catch up to the average PC they are left in the dust again. Consoles suck ass.

The problem comes from the control's more than anything now, there are far less limitations in terms of graphics and processing power as there were when Invisible War and Thief 3 were developed for consoles. Admittedly you could say that Oblivion suffered also but hey ho.
I'll be interested to see how BioShock comes out, being the spiritual successor to the System Shock series I imagine this would be a good yardstick to how a new Deus Ex would be developed.

The original Thief games didn't really have complex controls, at least they weren't complex enough to cause a problem when being transferred to console, and Deus Ex would have only caused an issue with it's inventory system.
The problem came with them trying to make it more accessable to the console crowd. Because lets face it, they are quite demanding games, but in different ways.

I agree about deux ex 2 and thief 3 sucking, but give the runner a chance! I wouldn't mind a Deus Ex 3 or Thief 4 on the 360 / PS3.

sorry, although i tend to type quite quickly and not follow the rules of grammar and puctuation to the letter (pardon the pun), doesnt mean i have to look to my own english.
the fact that i am english has nothing to do with it.

I have a very good idea for this game. Make it exclusive for consoles!!. The console gives the game the ability to be the best, control wise, graphic wise, fanboy wise and money wise offcourse.
Deus Ex 2 was so good I couldnt stop playing it for weeks, the interface, the story. I spontanously decided to throw Deus Ex 1 in the bin!!.
[offtopic]
BTW SAME FOR FALLOUT 3 it should be XBOX 360 only. It is pretty known to us all that most fans of the original series are on console, no gore, no adult themes, just one happy family. That is reality.

You'd have to ask the developers whether the design choices were made because of consoles or just to open up the game to more casual gamers though. What I loved about Morrowind was how you started as such a little weed that if you ventured too far off the beaten track you would get your arse kicked in a second. I don't see why they couldn't have done that for consoles if they really wanted to and I doubt it would have affected sales that much. Like I say you'd have to ask them for the reasons.
Invisible War was the biggest piece of shit sequel i've ever seen by the way, I've played through the original a dozen times and couldn't believe how poor that effort was.

Was Deus Ex 2 really that bad? I never played it on pc because my previous comp couldn't handle it and it crashes on my new comp.

No. You can play it and enjoy. It captures the atmosphere well. Sure you can bitch about the interface and the size of the levels, but in the end of the day it's a good game.

The problem was not only the dumbed down interface or the size of the levels, but that many of the characters were just boring and unlikeable, as opposed to Deus Ex.
IW was just a bland, mediocre console game.

The worst part was their lame ass attempt at making factions for you to side with, and then deciding that they wouldn't bother carrying anything over from one map to the next. You could kill everyone in a group in one place and then agree to help them on the next one and they'd love you again. Even if you avoided that glaring flaw and stuck with one side, the story was still garbage compared to the original. IW was easily the worst game I've ever played, simply because the original was such a fantastic game and as a sequel IW was the most miserable failure of all time.
I can only imagine that Eidos is making a third one because they fear Bethesda is about to unseat IW from its position at the top of the shitpile, and they know they can make a game that trashes everything about a franchise even more than Fallout 3 will.

The Eidos Montreal team is an entirely new team and they are all resourced from surrounding studios and new graduates. I have a couple friends of mine already hired over there. The team intends to give a fresh new look on the next Deus Ex installment. Even though the last Deus Ex game didn't come close to the first one it doesn't mean the third one will be shit. Warren Spector will probably have a very limited role on the third Deus Ex but then again it doesn't mean it will suck since all it takes is a couple of people hooked on the world of the first game.
Note to self: come up with a good sig.

Let's say you open a restaurant. The moment you stop showing up and let people, who don't understand how things should work, or don't really care, manage it for you, your restaurant goes to hell.
I think the same thing applies to video games. If Warren Spector isn’t onboard with the new game, story wise, it's gonna be mediocre at best. It's like those movie sequels where you have a different writer/director/cast.
