The 360 is a powerful force that looms over my head daily, but I've yet to take that leap into the 360 crowd.
However, it may finally be that time and I'm afraid I haven't quite been keeping up with the 'scene' for this console.
That's where you experts come in...
Last I remember, the 360 had flashable firmwares for the DVD drives and you could.. you know.. flash them, and then burn the 360 DVD images and play them?
Then I remember hearing about some kind of 360 with black glue or something, making it harder to take apart or something?
Are there any DVD drives out there that are NOT capable of being hacked/flashed?
Also I keep running into the "Blaster 360" in my research travels.. is that thing any good? Does it work on every 360 that could possibly come into my possession were I to purchase one?
And what's all this talk about Hitachi and Samsung needing 360USB or SATA something or other to do anything with?
Finally when the DVD drive is ready to do my bidding, is there some commom agreement on what DVD DL Burner drive is going to give a decent rate of success at burning? And media? I'm guessing any top-quality DL discs will do...
So, errr.. yah. Info is much appreciated, you guys are the best at this sooo.. here I humbly bow before your infinite wisdoms and such.

If you get a Hitachi, as an alternative for the expensive Verbatim media you can go for Fujifilm which is cheaper and it works just as good.

Hey sTo0z
First check http://www.team-xecuter.com/forums/ for information on the Blaster360 and the x360usb.There is an excellent guide (found at the link above) for using the x360usb. The x360usb only works with Hitachi drives. It makes it possible to connect your 360 drive to your pc, if you don't have a SATA connection. If you end up with a samsung, there are several guides found at xbox-scene to help you.
The dvd drive you'll use to burn your back-ups is important. The Pioneer 111d is by far the most used and recommended. On xbox-scene there is a compatibility list of drives that have been confirmed, check it out. NEC, Sony, Lite-on also make reliable drives for burning 360 games.
Some advice - do alot of research. You could buy a used 360, and save yourself some money. I bought mine for $50, because it is 2 years old and was in a house that had a fire. I took it apart, cleaned off all the shit from the fire. I also cleaned the dvd lens with window cleaner. It was barely booting original games at this point, so i decided to do a pot tweak (check xbox-scene) as a last resort... sure enough everything boots up now, even the shit media. So the moral of my story is this - buy one used cheap, and if the drive fails then replace the drive. Of course, if you have the $$$ fuck it, buy a new one... but cross your fingers and hope you don't get a phillips drive.

Here's a great pic to determine which drive you get.
Pics
I flashed my Sammy with the original Commodore4Eva FW and haven't reflashed or updated and it's still working to this day. I use Verbatim DL and burn using CloneCD @ 2.4 times with Pioneer 212D's.
I have a Blaster360 but haven't done the install yet 'cause to be honest (procrastination) there really hasn't been a need to (procrastination) but it's there just in case i need to reflash to new FW's.

They can all be hacked, but the process is different for some of them.

I 'm installing it on my 360. Basically it adds a connector outside the box (next to the HHD) in a neat fashion, so that you don't have to open the box everytime you have to flash it. I would call it a lazy man's device.

To flash the Samsun MS28 models, you either need to desoldier a point in the DVD Drive, or you need a Via SATA Chipset to do it. I opted for the latter.

its funny how new posters get blasted for making topics like these.
/me waits for a ban.
speaking of blasting, dont get the blaster360, you'll only update your firmware once, i know i have since last year october and havent done it again since, so save yourself a few bob, and welcome to the 360 family.
if you do flash it again, then buy it by all means, but one flash suited me fine.

MasterJuba, this is the first time I flashed my drive, but I got a question: When Microsoft releases their Spring or Fall updates, is reflashing necessary? Or do those updates have nothing to do with the firmware of the drive?

As for firmwares and the need to flash I'd say it differs a bit between drives.
Samsung for example got Error66 if the info in the firmware didn't match the drive information. This has been fixed in later versions of the firmwares (4.2 and forward if I am not incorrect). Also 5.2 for Samsung also adds the possibility to burn Xbox (1) games on DVD5 media. So for Samsung the latest IS the greatest.
When it comes to Hitachi, well the 0078FK only has one real firmware so that and that is the 1.6. For the rest the latest is better then earlier ones as it's not as picky on media (media checks patched). However I still use the 1.3 in my X360 so... Later firmwares don't add as much as they did on the Samsung. But who knows in the future DVD5 for xbox games might be available on Itachis too.
As for Blaster 360 it is to expensive and too late. 8 months ago it would've been great when it came new firmwares every now and then. Nowadays its useless. You could aswell flash it the old fashioned way if you really need to update.
Behold his GLORY! Bow for the technical master!

I sure did!!!
Mostly I just don't understand what's going on, why the drives are so different, what the Blaster360 is supposed to do, and what is/isn't hackable.
I think I am seeing the light now.
Thanks for all the answers guys, much appreciated.

sTo0z why do you want to go through all this crap yourself? Why don't you just buy your 360 pre-flashed from some shop? I bought my 360 Core with firmware flash for 309 €, that was only 10 Euro more than the normal price at that time. I didn't have to find out how to open it, didn't have to figure out how to flash it, didn't have to risk screwing something up and didn't loose my warranty (since the shop where I bought it gave me 2 years warranty). Imo buying it already flashed is the best way. Or is that not possible in the US?

Actually that is a pretty good point. I was close to buying a flashed premium box for like a 80€ extra but decided to do it myself. It worked and everything but I kind of screwed up with the warranty-stickers so now I'm a bit worried what will happen if my box dies on me
On the other hand doing it yourself is much like building your own computer, buying IKEA-furniture instead of already finished ones and so on. It's very satisfying when it is done and you get to know the basics of your product a little better

that was only 10 Euro more than the normal price at that time} wow the guy who is flashing them is making a big profit!
all so it is not that hard to do!
all u are doing is flashing the dvd rom firmware with a hacked one!
taking an xbox 360 apart is not that hard if you just take your time
plus some people may want to do it there self !

Honestly, now that I think about it, the Blaster360 was a big waste of cash. All you really need is a cutter tool and a sata-extension. But I'm stlil a noob about the 360

its playable on live,i have since i done mine. firmware hack has been going for a year or so , ms soft havent bought an update out to deal with it, the might deal with it, or might leave it who is to no, or can they detect the firmware in the dvd rom has been changed! who knows.
i suppose alot of people just buy an xbox 360 and happily pay £40 uk a game, some hack there xbox 360 so in case there original discs get scratched or damaged, they can then playback ups,
me i spend enough on hardware, and i wont on software never have never will,

I modded my 360 because of the following reasons:
- Microsoft fucked us with the Elite by trying to turn the 360 into a goddamn PC.
- New 360 games in this country costs +/- €70!

The only reason I haven't hacked my 360 is because my internet connection is shit, so theres no chance i'll be downloading 4gb or more regularly. This is also the reason I hate all of you...
