I expierenced that my self at work. It happens with fast drives like 52x for example. The reason for this can be the cds themselfes. If you have cds with a heavy imbalance (wich can be caused from printings or from stickers on the cd) the cd will brake and split into thousand pieces damaging the drive. 52x cds rotate at about 10000rpm, so they spin like fast scsi drives. I would never buy any drives faster than 40x (or use software to throttle the speed to 40x).

I had a starange experiance with a cd-rom drive. I heard the drive start to spin faster and faster, making scraching noises. The drive tray opened on its own and the cd flew out of it like a freezbee about 3-4 feet from the box. I thought my putter tried to kill me ninja style Smile.
