I have a laptop here that needs a format since some idiot has completely infected it with viruses and spyware.

At the moment its running Windows XP SP2, And I was thinking about upgrading it to Vista instead. It has about 468MB RAM (Shared) So I was thinking about running it without the fancy features.

What do you think?

468 is not enough to run Vista smooth...

Go with XP.

I also have a 1GB Flash drive that I think could be used for RAM using the Vista readyboost feature. Would I be able to run it ok with that?

It doesn't really improve the performance that much... If you can, upgrade the RAM in that laptop, go with 1GB. If you can't, I don't think you'll enjoy Vista much, but try installing it and see how it runs.

Installed, Was a nightmare to install drivers. Runs OKish, However the OS sucks compared to XP.

* Shutdown menu sucks
* Windows Explorer menu sucks, Because theres no menu!
* I can't believe it still turns off file extensions off by default.
* Windows automatic driver search is hell.
* If on a standard account pressing "Run as administrator" is fucking useless.

Well, I had seen sites that mentioned these problems including compatibility issues, But I never thought it would be THAT bad, But well it is.

Whats pissed me off most about it is, they've had so much time to solve these problems but they've just seemed to make it worse than XP. Rolling Eyes

i used one of the RC's of vista cant remember if it was 1 or 2 on my laptop for about 2 months and i thought it was great cept for minor driver irritations. i liked the new menu styles in explorer, yeah it takes a bit of getting used to but XP was a fair bit different from the likes of 98/2000 when it was first released. my GF just got a new laptop with vista and its running perfect. no issues at all. she seems to like it.

note. the guy who said there are no menus....press alt. it aint difficult if you miss em that much dude. although the up one level button no longer exists which irritated me a little at first but i got so used t it i forget its there on xp now

Can you enable the menus all the time? Is there a setting somewhere for it? Looked but could not find.

No need for up-level, as you have the arrows now, near the dir. names. Every dir. name is also a button, so you can click there as well. It takes tome to get used to, but it's kinda useful.

DeMoN064, just because you have a shit PC, doesn't mean Vista works slow. With 1GB or more, Vista actually works faster than XP.

[EDIT] There's an option to enable menus, but, ffs, why?

You can enable menus in IE7 as well, but I don't see the point. Anything useful you need from them is already on the explorer, and for the folder options, you just click ALT.

Demon, i do actually agree with leo, just press alt for if you need em like you do with IE7 and media player 11 or it looks kinda shit dude and takes away the sleekness of vista.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Vista SUCKS , Vista is the same old WINxp but like xp was build on dx6 ,Vista is build on dx10 and thats about it . Vista is only so hyped that it :
1.has dx 10 that can produce gfx better then on Xbox360
2.Will enable you to play xbox360 vs PC games
3.Has new Aero desktop
4.can enable you to view HD movies
5."GAMES FOR WINDOWS" program

The cons of Vista is :
1.NO new file transfer system that was announced for the new Tetra HDDs .
2.NO Icon based on vectors still the same old BMP .
3.Vista is a tagged system , just like on Xbox360 you must pay for MP the same is with VISTA , PAY for a PC live account for PC game .
4.Aero desktop slows down every thing , thats why you need like 2 gigs or more ram , the same with cores - B.Gates said "you need min 2 cores to run this sys with nice speeds" , asked why he answered "Aero uses one core for the features"- WTF crap is that Linux does not need such a machine to have even better features then Vista desktop .
5.Even todays games don`t work in Vista or run so sluggish that you want to trow away your computer , oh yeah now that two - four cores make sense Laughing (read nr4) .
6.The lack of drivers for every thing .
7.VISTA can enable you to view HD movies, yeah right like winxp can`t do that ALL READY .

and so on and so on ....

The only good thing about this is that the new VISTA2 that will be released in 2008-2009 will have half of the bugs fixed by those "pay to play" beta testers that bought VISTA today .

personaly i don't care how OS loox as long as everything works on it and it's stable [using classic xp theme], with vista i had problems like compatibility with some programs i regulary use, no 5.1 and shity video drivers

Demonika, noticed in your post you said something about paying for MP im assuming you mean media player obviously. Thing is i'm actually a little confused about this, i use xp SP2 at present on both laptop and desktop and i have a media player install file which i installed np and its not a beta or anything, and i didnt pay anything and it never once asked me to, HOWEVER you said in vista it makes you pay? my GF's doesnt on her laptop but that was pre-installed so im assuming thats why, BUT i gave my install file to my friend whos pretty mucha noob and he's using MCE and it asked him to pay?! any thoughts or facts on why would be appreciated?!

Sad
I ran Vista on a 4000+ A64 machine with 1GB ram and a GF6600GT, and it ran considerably faster than XP. You can't argue with me here, because that's how it was. And it's not only with me (as in I'm imagining it), many report that. I keep saying, buy people don't really get it. Vista is not about the new fancy AERO.
Drivers lack is indeed the show-stopper for Vista. I use Vista for everything other than playing games, because stupid nVidia is instead of coming out with optimized drivers. Vista just runs faster than XP, programs start faster and the overall system performance is much smoother.

Yes you read right it will be free for "SOME" games that will enable multiplayer game on the silver Live account , they said it will be those games that will not have the "game for windows" Logo on it , but those with the logo will need in couple of moths Live Gold to enable net play, exclusively on VISTA Laughing - great Rolling Eyes the new format of net dx10 gaming .

@GestaltO
Vista with the help of Windows Media player 11 has more DRM that any other player can deactive or slowly degrade your playability (it checks the net library just block WMP11 with your firewall and Peer2Guardian and you should be OK) . Anyway i recomend VLC player in Vista Wink

Wow dude you created a oxymoron , o and my winxp boots and is fully operational in 29 sec Rolling Eyes so if faster for you means turning your comp then I recomend changing yours defagment and cleaning programs .

My old one did load in 30secs with Vista too... Rolling Eyes

My current one does it even faster... Rolling Eyes

Why do you even argue with me? Rolling Eyes If it doesn't run faster for you, than don't run it. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
