first up the case, ive decided to go with the cm stacker 832, because its nice and roomy, and seems to have a good solid build and looks quite nice too.

ill slap in an 8800gtx xxx edition card (which dont cost that much more than the normal 8800gtx's)

quad core QX6700 (i know at the moment not much use re: games, but thats not all ill be using this for

looking at a evga 680i motherboard - im still pretty iffy on this, so if theres a better one that you can recommend, please do. this would be the REVISED 122-CK-NF68-A1 board, which is the version that works properly with the quad core cpu's. - ive also heard theres a problem with these when putting them into the 832 cases?

ram: Corsair TWIN2X2048-8500C5D XMS Dominator DDR2-1066 2GB Kit

hdds: looking at a raptor for my main drive (os, programs, etc) and whatever else will go on whatever 500gb drive looks good... but my main focus is the raptor for my primary drive.

power supply, im not sure yet... is it wise to go with one that features modular cabling to cut down on clutter if i dont need the additional cables, or is there no real benefit in it? any additinoal thoughts/replacements etc? cheers.

modular will end up losing power due to the extra resistance comming from plugging shit in.

The best power supplies (among some others) I know of is pc power & cooling turbo's

1K Watt
http://www.xoxide.com/pcpowerandcooling-turbocool-1kw-psu.html

850 watt
http://www.xoxide.com/pcpc-850w-ssi-psu.html

theres a 510 watt too but their a bit harder to find now. These are also rated at 40c I believe instead of most PSU companies that rate them when their turned off.

Their pricey but the best I've ever used.

This is my own tactic but I ususally get some little HD just used for my main OS and programs and what not, then I get a faster HD made just for games then I have my storage HD's. That way if a virus hits my HD it only affects my OS and I can reinstall without losing anything. Minus the games that save games in "my documents"

Looks like money isn't a concern, why don't you get the Striker?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131074

The CM Stacker is a very nice case, I've heard it to be pretty huge inside and it has those 4 side panel 120mm fans. Just make sure those dominators don't cause clearance issues with any aftermarket HSF you get for the CPU since the heatspreaders rise and may obstruct clearance.

As a matter a fact you did not mention any sort of aftermarket cooling which for those hot ass quad cores would be high up on my list. I'm sorta meh about Raptors but yeah.

For the PSU just grab a high quality one, I don't think it being modular should concern you since that case has tons of room for cable management.

thanx for the info on the power supply.. i guess my primary concern with modular vs traditional was wireclutter, but i guess with a case the size of the 832, thats not really an issue... so ill stick with a normal supply then. does everything else look ok otherwise?

re hdd's it might make sense to look into partitioning the raptor? would that make sense or will stop the drive running as optimally as it would without partitioning? at the moment im running apps on a seperate drive to my os, so its definately something ive concidered doing before and so its something ill most likely look into again in the future.

well from what ive seen, aside from additional fans (ill have to read up more... and probably ask here too... on correct airflow - ie which fans should be sucking and which blowing) - i didnt really think i was in that much of a need for additional (ie liquid) cooling at the moment - that'd be something id look into a bit down the road when i get into overclocking my system and become more knowledgable and confident in what im doing.

im not what id call a newbie when it comes to pc's... while my tech knowledge is hardly right up there, ive upgraded and kept alive quite nicely many pc's over the years, and feel comfortable enough around them to finally take a stab at actually BUILDING one, so this is somewhat of a project pc... yes its got some pricey components, but i intend for it to be a project pc that lasts me for quite a long time... so ill learn as i go, and upgrade/add components as my knowledge grows.

re: stryker - how is it for overclocking? as good as the 680i? better? looking around it seems noticably pricier than the 680i, is it worth it? one of the best boards around currently with quad support?

Check out the user reviews from the newegg striker link I sent, their general concensus is that it OC's pretty well. Besides your not gonna be looking for huge FSB increases with that quad core, your CPU will be the limiting factor not the mobo.

As for cooling I wouldn't think water is necessary, Mr.Natan grabbed a Tuniq Tower and it performed excellently, dig around and find out if it has any clearance issues with either of the two mobo's your debating over. I'm thinking you should probably just grab that eVGA 680i you originally intended on getting.

I dunno if partitioning it would be needed if you are looking to dump all your data on a secondary HDD. It's not like it would make formatting any easier since you'd just wipe everything and backup what's needed on the 500.

while browsing around on newegg for 832 case, i found this:

Cons: may not effect all, but the power switch header that connects to the motherboard is a 3 pin, not a 2, had to re-pin it to get it working with my evga 680i board. Not all users may feel comfortable doing this.

how big of an issue is this? i know what the issue is, but how big of a thing is this and how easy is it to fix and whats involved in it?

________________
and im not expecting MASSIVE increases with the quad, remember this is also a learning project... increasing performance while keeping it stable (heck, just learning my way around the whole thing) is really the primary goal in regards to overclocking.

thanks.

Most modern cases use 3 pin power pins now, it looks like that 680i is strictly 2 pin so that 3 pin from the case would need to be re-wired which isn't really that difficult.

But if your not handy with wiring then maybe some alternatives would be your best bet, as in a different case/mobo.

All I really see you having to do to fix the pin issue is relocate the negative or positive pin accordingly.

OXO <- 3 pin

OOX <- 2 pin

O = where the mobo headers go through
X = where the empty gap with no wire is

you would have to move one of the pins over to fit the 2 pin slot of that mobo I believe.

Sorry if that's confusing.
