Hi all!

I need help buying a new system, I need some ideas on buying a *cheap* system that is Dual Core AM2 and can have DDR2. I have about 140 pounds (yes it’s not much) as I’m a student. I don’t mind buying an Intel or an AMD CPU so if you could please help me out since I’m not really that updated on hardware these days. Also it needs to make me last a year or 2 hehe Wink Here's what I maybe want:

Intel or AMD Dual Core
Motherboard PCI-e
I don’t need Memory since I got some
Graphics card I don’t need until later on

Btw I live in the UK too

Oh and my spec at the moment is: 3700 AMD64 939 and a Gig of RAM.

Thanks for the help Smile

Although it's one of those awkward times to buy new hardware for a PC, since theres huge price drops for the core2 duo chips in a month or two, and also the new nvidia cards starting from Feb 12th 07.

asus z170-A || core i5-6600K || geforce gtx 970 4gb || 16gb ddr4 ram || win10 || 1080p led samsung 27"

The conroe CPU's which are going to be effected the most are the E6600 and E6700 and the X6800 as their prices need to come down to accomodate the lower line of Quad cores. The E6300 and E6400 are being replaced with 4Mb L2 cache versions and will be priced similiarly.

Under the right circumstances right now any Core 2 Duo CPU purchase is a Win Win situation, nothing is coming out to blow it out the water until Intels 45nm fab chips hit the market in 2008. So if you buy a E6600 now worst case scenario it will have reduced price by $50-100. Or grab a lower end model and overclock it and not look back. You can also play safe and just wait until all of these price cuts occur, either way your getting the fastest CPU's available right now.

Only thing you need to watch out for is the graphics card market, ouch. Crying or Very sad

Many people go for the E6600, is this because of the price?

I bought a E6600 for around 290 Euro + a Heatsink from Scythe "Ninja" for another 35 Euro
Running it at 3.2, thats almost 1 GHz over the factory setting (2.4 GHz).

Compare that to the X6800 2.93GHz for around 945 Euro, I think the 6600 gives you pretty good value for money, no ? Wink

If you go for a 6300 or 6400 you end up with a cheaper deal but they only have a CPU Cache at 2 MB, which means that they still run slower then the 6600 at the same OCed speed.
Another reason is that its harder to OC a CPU like the X6800, shure you can but you will reach the limit faster.

You guys decide if the E6300 which = Half the price of a E6600 is worth the 5% performance difference due to the L2 Cache when cocked identically, and again this 5% is pretty application dependent. Many times the difference between them is within the margin of error in benchmarking.

If I had the money I'd grab a E6600, but for half the price and near equal overclockability you can get a E6300 but preferrebly a E6400 since it has a higher multiplier, 400Mhz FSB = 3.2Ghz compared to E6300's 400FSB = 2.8Ghz.

Are you just looking for a CPU and motherboard? because £140 isn't much to go on and you'd struggle to get a more than a CPU and motherboard if you went the core2 route. I'd still say you should wait until the price drops for the core2's happen.
