I don't know about retail, but the beta versions had no problems with this. Just mount the image in windows, and install, select it to use a new partition, and it will copy all files it needs to disk, and then reboot to install.

so your saying that if want it on the c: ill have to start installing on the d:, just to get all the install files?
And then, format the c: drive, and then continuing installing afterwards?
like in the old days with 98 and me, you just had to have the i386 folder on another drive boot from a flobby disk, and wolla

You don't have to do anything special, just select a drive or unpartitioned space to install vista to, and the setup will handle everything.

So i only got 2 option atm right?
1. upgrade windows
2. install it to another drive, so i got A clean install of vista, so i need to choose with OS id like to boot from.

Vista minimum requirements don't specify a DVD drive, they specify a CD-ROM drive, so there'll most likely be a CD version which you can use.

Wow, i really dont get all these rude and snide replys.
I used to install every version of windows from hardrive, it was the slickest option. Expecially when you want to install another component, all your windows files are on the HD, no need for a CD. I had a master harddrive with 95 (All versions), 98, xp, all my dos utils etc. Need a fresh windows, i just pop the harddrive in a slave, yadada, 20 minutes, fresh windows, way better than a cd install.
To do this install though, i think you need your c drive formated with system files or a boot disk.
Your bootdsik should have format.exe on it right. So format c: /s , and just format d: regular.
Reboot and you should be at a command prompt. Now i assume you will copy the Vista DVD contents to the d drive correct.
I havent tried this yet with vista, so i might be completely wrong. But i have always done Harddrive windows installs this way. I always keep my old 98 CD around, its saved me many headachs. I still use Fdisk ffs,
