wow ... the Zune sounds like a colossal piece of shit
Quote: | Criticism
* Though Zune is a Microsoft product, it is not compatible with players and online music stores using Microsoft's PlaysForSure technology. This includes music purchased from Microsoft's recently retired MSN Music store.[29]
* Numerous industry pundits have criticized the Zune for its features and functions (see below) based on a side-by-side comparison with the iPod[30]. Meanwhile, others[31][32][33] have criticized its DRM and the market's potential responses, especially given that it will compete with Microsoft's own early-adopters of the PlaysForSure DRM scheme. Technology reviewer Leo Laporte (of G4techTV (Canada)) said in his November 11, 2006 radio show that Zune may be the "beginning of the end" for DRM as a business tactic.[34]
* While Zune has built-in Wi-Fi capabilities, it can only connect to other Zune devices; it can't wirelessly sync with its host PC, nor can it wirelessly connect to the internet and download new music via a Wi-Fi hotspot.[35][36]
* Songs wirelessly transferred from one Zune to another can only be played three times. While this is understandable for a protected song for which the recipient has not paid, this limitation is applied even if the song was purchased through the Zune store and the recipient has paid for a Zune Pass.[37] It is also applied even for material that is self-recorded, or copyright-free and unprotected by DRM. After three days, the song expires regardless of whether or not it has been played. Just playing half the song (or one minute, whichever comes first) counts as one "play." A song cannot be resent to the same device, nor can a song received from someone else be passed on to a third person.[38][39][40][41] In addition, not all songs purchased from the Zune Marketplace can be shared via Wi-Fi with other Zunes (see note 1).
* Unlike many hard drive-based music players, Zune cannot be used as an external hard drive. (Although, there is a simple registry hack to fix this)
* Microsoft provides no way to transfer TV shows recorded using Microsoft's own Windows Media Center digital video recorder software (which is included in Windows Vista and Windows XP Media Center Edition) to the Zune.
* The Zune device is incompatible with Microsoft's other media player, Windows Media Player.
* The Zune is not Macintosh-compatible.

Oh this MS bashing is so lame. Everyone thougth that x-box was going to suck ass; and the first gen DID. But the new 360 totally whoops the sonys+nintendos' collective asses. My prediction is that in a couple of years, Zune or it's derivatives will have a substantial share of the mp3-player market.

I got a Zune for free. I work at an ebgames and they had a contest where the top 250 stores in the company who sell the most Zunes and accessories get 4 Zunes for the store. We won so I got one. I like it a lot and I've had no problems with it. I was never really a big fan of ipods to begin with. Found them overpriced and basically got sick everyone's bullshit with them.

I am thinking of buying a Zune. Do you think it's worth it's money, and can I use pirated music with it? Or should I go and get an Ipod for the same price?

It's really up to you. I love the Zune and I have friends that have one so I can share music with them. Music that I have downloaded works with it perfectly fine. Just that with iTunes music I have to burn it to a disc, then rip the disc to put it on my Zune. The screen is really nice and clear. The iPod is probably a bit smaller. Although I also have a friend that works at Best Buy and just today he said that he gets like 3-4 iPods in a day broken. I've heard other stories about broken iPods. The Zune is pretty solid. The only problem I have with it is the Zune Marketplace. It's like Microsoft's version of iTunes. Problem is I haven't gotten the songs to download correctly off the marketplace. I bought 2 cds from it and every time I try to download them I get an error. At least it just cost me Microsoft points which I have a ton of cause of 360. Another thing too is that it's new so you might want to wait. You know like with the iPod there a new and improved one every year. Plus there's a ton of accessories for the iPod. But there is a good amount for the Zune since MS is behind it. It's all up to you. If you want something different, go with the Zune. If you want the same thing everyone else has and what you're familiar with, get an iPod.

Just got myself a 30 GB Ipod a few days ago and am loving it. I already converted a few movies and tv shows and threw them on there. All my photos are on there.
I was thinking about the Zune but after playing around with my Dad's 80Gb Ipod i decided to go with that.
The sharing music thing on the zune seems pretty cool but I dont know how much I would use it...
@Clevesa... You might want to try going to the store and getting a feel for both of them instead of making your mind up based on internet suggestions. Just a thought.

My girl won an IPOOD nano and gave it to me (as I bought her one for christmas so she didn't need the one she won..).. personally I love it. I've always hated the IPOOD but the nano was perfect for my needs and it works so well! Love it.
