Quote: | Verdict: Solid performance at an incredible price makes this the best-value 20in widescreen TFT you can buy
LG Electronics' new 20in widescreen offering doesn't come with the same gloss and polish as the beautiful Asus PW201, but it's every bit the match for it in terms of quality. And the L204WT comes with several deft touches that make it a far more suitable all-round choice than its brasher counterpart.
For a start, the image it produces is much more appropriate to office work, with text appearing crisp even on an white background. The 300cd/m2 brightness is enough for a strong white level, yet the black level remains impressively untarnished by the light. The Desktop is clear, crisp and a pleasure to work with, and there's a useful Text mode that raises the contrast for this purpose.
But before anyone gets carried away with the claimed 2,000:1 contrast ratio, it's important to point out that this figure is artificial. To achieve it, LG's Digital Fine Contrast (DFC) is activated when you switch to Movie mode and dynamically adjusts the range depending on the scene. So a predominantly dark scene sees the dynamic range lowered to offer more detail in the blacks, and light scenes see the opposite effect. In practice, this leaves you with a constantly shifting dynamic range, particularly during dark scenes. We soon found this disquieting to watch and switched it off.
But even without this mode activated, the contrast is still good, so it can safely be avoided. Dark areas showed a respectable level of detail, and skin tones had none of the artificially warm or cold hues that affect many monitors. We saw a fair amount of grain in certain scenes and a bit of a dull tinge in some white areas, so it's nowhere near perfect, but for most uses it's good enough. Gaming is a viable option, as the 5ms response time meant we saw no problems in fast-action games. Colours looked fairly vivid too, even against the glossy Asus.
To make the necessary changes, we were pleased to see the OSD is straightforward to use. The buttons are on the back of the TFT, but with the labels on the front they're easy enough to locate. As for other features, it can't match the Asus for ports - or for build quality either - but if you can cope with a stand that only tilts, it's perfectly solid and durable. Unlike the Asus, there are no built-in speakers or USB ports.
Compared to the PW201, the LG L204WT may seem plain and under-featured, but look closer and you'll find a good-quality display. However, what really pushes it out in front is the price: £213 puts it firmly into bargain territory and makes it simply one of the best-value monitors available today. The previous A-List entry, the Philips 200W6, was a solid office worker recommended mostly for its stunning price, but the L204WT is more of an all-round performer and costs even less. Unless your heart's set on one of the premium glossy models like the Asus, you simply won't find a better deal than this.

Thanks for the quick reply Jenni, i look at some reviews but sometimes they are not accurate for gaming so i thought maybe having the opinion of someone who actually tried it...but on the other hand, the review seems quite good.

I forgot to ask an important question, this screen is wide screen so what is going to happen with games that doesnt support that? As far as i know, only3 games installed right now offer the option 16:9/16:10 (CoD 2, DoD:S, CS:S).
Should i go for a normal 4:3 screen or get wide screen? Cause games like BF2, Company of Heroes, F.E.A.R. and many more of my installed games doesnt have the wide screen feature

Get a samsung syncmaster. their GREAT. FEAR does actually have a widescreen option it's just not optimized for it. Company of heroes as well. Matter of fact alot of games I play have widescreen support. Even older games, hell Deus ex does as well. Games that don't support widescreen give you the option to play under standard resolutions..just looks like shit. Some games your able to force the resolution by manualy entering it in the .ini that holds the resolution settings.

I have recently bought the Syncmaster 205BW. The store i bought it from had the 205BW, the LG and the Acer one. I went for the Samsung because the stand from the LG was quite crappy, if i remember correctly you couldn't change the height of the screen. The LG had a better contrast though.
Right now i have two pc's connected to it, the gaming pc has a 7900GS with HDCP so i'm all set for hd stuff as the 205BW also has HDCP via DVI. I have played Prey and Sid Maiers Railroad over the holidays and was quite pleased with the performance of the screen. 4:3 gaming is also no problem as the nvidia driver handles that well.

After reading your post i said to myself "WTF is he talking about??" so i drag my ass to the nearest Future Shop to see how the screen looks like with my own eyes, you are totally right. I was quite disapointed cause the size i was seeing in my head was the size of a 26" WS.
In that price range, theres none of square 19" who offer the quality like this one do (2000:1 / 5ms) I tried FEAR for a good 25 minutes and it was pretty nice.

Check out the Samsung 204B. It's a 20.1 inch standard 4:3 aspect ratio monitor. I use it at its native res 1600x1200 and its great. Its 5ms response time (probably grey to grey) and theres no ghosting. Adjustable height, swivel, etc. The only negative is bleeding on the top and bottom edges when viewing a pitch black screen, its completely unnoticeable 98% of the time though. Even better is the fact that its cheap as hell.
I looked at the 204BW I guess the widescreen variant of the 204B and was like.....um no.

Well i guess im kinda a samsung fanboy when it comes to moniters. I picked up 2 SyncMaster 244Ts for the office, there unreal.
And today i just got in 2 SyncMaster 225bw, and sofar im very happy. Its a 22 inch widescreen with 5ms response time. And they were fairly cheap aswell, $400 each.
I have heard that these monitors have a backlight bleeding problem, but i have not noticed it at all. Very happy with my purchase. Now to find a use for my old CRTs.

god damn, speaking of widescreens, I tried playing an FPS on a normal 19" as opposed to using widescreen for almost a month now and I got a headache from it, everything is so mushed it's like looking into the circus mirrors.
